Piano is making strange sound
Our piano is very very old.... I think it's almost 100 years old or something like that.
When I play it it's been making a sort of buzzing sound..
Is this from dust on the strings or something?
It's driving me absolutely nuts! Please Help!

The damper felts are buggered. Get them replaced.

Tuning might not hurt either.
And now there was no doubt that the trees were really moving - moving in and out through one another as if in a complicated country dance. ('And I suppose,' thought Lucy, 'when trees dance, it must be a very, very country dance indeed.')

Damper felts or maybe a loose or cracked bridge. Not a home fix in either case, but very common in older instruments.

Re: Piano is making strange sound
There are those people. A friend was considering taking our piano. They declined (bummer). They thought it might be too much trouble to take it into the local music store every so often to get it retuned. We had to explain.

You know a sad thing? In my neck of the woods (northern NJ) there are pitifully few piano tuners left. Our one local piano shop went under a couple of years ago too. Your local piano shop is were you'd take an instrument for bigger repairs (OK, they'd come and get it ), so in a manner of speaking you'd ship it back, since you might well have bought it there years before.
Is the piano, I mean an actual acoustic piano, a dinosaur? When I was a kid every home, at least the more affluent ones, had a piano. Nearly every classroom in the grammar school had one and the teachers for kindergarten through at least fifth grade played for the students every day. That kept the tuners and repair shops going very well. But that's all gone now.

A few of the keys on my piano are accompanied by a metallic buzz, too. I suspect it's a tiny loose part somewhere that resonates with that particular frequency. Have just made an appointment with the piano tuner, as it's at least three years since I've had it done...

Re: Piano is making strange sound
It's a Henry & S. G. Hindeman, New York, piano. Can't find that maker anywhere on the net...
We've had it as long as I can remember... We got it from some friends.
As for the size, it's gigantic, and bigger then my teacher's piano. lol.
And it is an actual acoustic piano.
It's somewhat embarrassing but, I don't even remember us getting it tuned...lol, that's probaly what it is.

Never owned an instrument that couldn't be self-tuned.

Re: Piano is making strange sound
With the improvements in electronic keyboards, I have to admit, we're only using the acoustic piano for Christmas decorations and photos. It's a mantle that is out of tune. Hurts my ears to hear it played. To get it re-tuned which would only last a little while, I could buy a new instrument. Maybe rich people with quality instruments will keep acoustic pianos going, more moderate people, not so much. It's sad.
I had a humongous upright piano as a child that is still at my parent's house. I have never seen a piano as big. There was room on each side of the keyboard to place a drink and an ashtray. It also had a damper lever on the side of the keyboard.

OMG that is funny! We also use it as a mantle! We have most of our photo collection and family albums on it, not to mention a bunch of old statuettes.mutepointe wrote:With the improvements in electronic keyboards, I have to admit, we're only using the acoustic piano for Christmas decorations and photos. The keyboard on ours also has to large spaces on both sides of the keyboard.
My brother is always putting the TV remote on it, which then usually gets the piano closed on it. It's a miracle the remote's still in one piece!

Yeah, the piano as a mantle for the display of things more important. Well, at least you guys still give them a place in your homes.
Are you sure it's not all the stuff on the piano making the rattle? Seriously, I called the refrigerator repairman to fix a rattle in my fridge and it turned out to be all the junk I had piled on the top. Seriously.
