Uh oh...electric violin

Post by brewerpaul »

Been playing my fiddle more lately and really enjoying it, although I'm not ready to take it out in public yet. There are times when I can't practice for fear of disturbing others, so I came across this:

Anyone tried this electric fiddle? For $55 it gets some great reviews.

Yup. My bandmate bought one to practice silently. Works well for that, but it's a little funky plugged in. For silent practice it's worth the $55. Don't bring it to a session.

Unless you also bring your Marshall JCM800 300w rig and all your effect pedals. Electric fiddle with a slapback chorus, some flanger and distortion. That's the trad stuff, right there.

I must admit, I find the weird
body outline strangely compelling.

Looks like something Spock might have played on Star Trek.

If I ever get good enough to play fiddle with our Irish band, would this be acceptable through an amp?

That would largely depend on the opinions of your bandmates. I know several trad players who would frown on it, to say the least. It doesn't have a very traditional violin sound. This is to the violin what the Stratocaster is to the classical guitar. It most certainly could be amplified to play with anything else. It has a 1/4" output jack that will connect it to any amp or PA.

Oh my. $55. I've spent more money on dinners. For how much electrified instruments have never interested me, the first time that I saw an electric stand up bass, I gasped. I don't own one, probably never will, but that doesn't mean I can't imagine that I could play one.

BUY IT!

Tell us something.: I'm a fiddler and, latterly, a fluter. I love the flute. I wish I'd always played it. I love the whistle as well. I'm blessed in having really lovely instruments for all of my musical interests.

I use a Skyinbow for trad gigs. I was finding that the problems of amplifying an accoustic were getting too much for me. Mind you, A Skyinbow costs more than $55. :o

I saw this myself a while back, and it's actually dropped in price. I believe it was in the 70 price range. But after reading some of the poorer reviews, I decided there was a 50/50 chance my violin would come screwed up.

It seems with a lot of cheaper amazon violins that you either get an awesome instrument for a great deal, or you get something that only slightly resembles a working instrument.

But at 50, I think I might even try and pick one of these up.

Yeah, the common thread in the reviews seems
to be that the tuners are a bit cussed. It would
probably benefit from adding finetuners. Sounds
like the action is pretty high, too. Might be a fun
project.
