What mandolin for an improver?

My wife is playing Irish music on a cheap mandolin that she'd gladly replace. I'm hoping I can find a replacement around the 500 - 700 euro / dollars mark and I 'd be grateful if you could offer any advice on what to buy? We're based in Dublin. Cheers!

David Freshwater in Scotland is often said to produce very good, reasonably priced flat top mandolins (at the current exchange rate about 500 euro or so):
