Must be nice to have sympathetic strings. The ones on my fiddle are cruel and heartless, especially when I try to play on them...

My strings aren't so nasty...but as I've said elsewhere, my pegs were. Were...as in past tense...I've now been pegheaded!

I have long been a fan of Hardanger fiddles and their music. I hope to own one someday.

Beautiful work Mike.

Sound Sample - Nyckelharpa

Post by Mike Hulme »

Go to:

http://www.fiddleworks.co.uk/akersbystalet.mp3

I had to record it in a hurry for Ebay, so the sound quality isn't brilliant - but the 'harpa is!

I haven't got around to recording the Hardanger Fiddle yet. But it is going on Ebay tonight, so I'll add a soundclip.

You don't have to take off the fingerboard to change the understings. There is a channel cut into the neck and the underneath of the fingerboard

Thanks for that Mike.

Here is a sound sample of my axe in action. It is a hornpipe I wrote entitled The Squandered Fortune.

Hornpipe

Nice one Joseph!

I like the way it twists into the Major in the final measures. Gives it a nice lift.

Why not go straight for the hardcore stuff, it can't be worse than playing the pipes :)

Image

These two are for sale locally for about 250$ each, one for you and the painted one for your wife (both cromatic).

Should sell quite fast for that price but you never know.

Edit: both sold and image is now gone

Very nice playing Mike!

There is no such thing as tailwind -- it's either against you or you're simply having great legs!

Yes, they are cool looking fiddles... I have always wondered how one goes about playing them.

Nice playing Mike.

Playing Nyckelharpa

Post by Mike Hulme »

Joseph,

You play the 'harpa across your lap. if you look at Marcus' photo you will see four playing strings. Only the top three strings have keys the fourth (Low C) is a drone. They are reversed, i.e. your hand moves in the opposite direction (anti-clockwise) to cross to a higher string. The one I recorded has four rows of keys, reversed in the opposite direction so they work like a fiddle, and the instrument is tuned in fifths, again like a fiddle;
G-D-A-E. The three row 'harpa is tuned more like a cello C-G-C-A. The sixth interval between the first and second strings is used because it allows your hand to play arpeggios very fast - a definite advantage is Swedish tunes.

Hi Gabriel!

Price is very low, 2000 SEK (~220 EUR). I dont know who the maker is but the seller lives quite close to me. I know Mike is also considering these.
I can send you some links for the ad and other "Nyckelharpor" 4 sale in a while, am in a hurry to get to work right now.

Cheers!

Hi again Gabriel!

Both keyed fiddles in the image above are sold, I think Mike got one of them.
You can occationally find very good deals on nice used ones here in Sweden for around 550 EUR. One from a famous maker would cost 1-2500 EUR.

http://www.blocket.se is a good resourse for used instruments in Sweden.
Can be a bit tricky to navigate if your Swedish is not up to date :D

Use "nyckelharp*" (wildcard to cover both "harpa" and "harpor") as search word, then select "Musikinstrument" in the category section and "Hela Sverige" to include all of Sweden.

This is whats available today:
http://www.blocket.se/li?q=nyckelharp*& ... 1&c=30&w=3

Cheers!
