We had one of those about 6ft in diameter (also upstate NY).
The previous home owner was of the opinion that when the house was built back in the late 60's, the contractors buried building debris at that spot and since much of it was degradable stuff like wood, it slowly decayed and the soil sank. He didn't bother with it, but I discovered a pile of garden soil back in our woods and used that to fill it.
