25th Anniversary of the Sony Walkman

Post by MarkB »

"No invention in my lifetime has so changed an art and cheapened it as the Sony Walkman, which first infiltrated our culture 25 years ago this month." By Norman Lebrecht / July 26, 2004

Lebrecht's article in below link;

Can we live without some sort of Walkman device, I have tried but at times I have needed to shut the world out. And I was one of the first to buy one, then a discman, then a discman with speakers which I still use in the bedroom although the my laptop is now the main source.

Interesting. Although anyone who plays music (on an instrument) knows that the difference between listening to pre-recorded music and listening to live music is night & day. You really can't even compare the two. I like having my Discman with me, yes....it made the train ride across Ireland (soundtrack from The Royal Tennenbaums) exquisite. But I don't get used it it and equate it with when I see live music.

It's a big world. There's room for just about everything.

Tell us something.: Been a fluter, citternist, and uilleann piper; committed now to the way of the harp.

Oh, yeah: also a mod here, not a spammer. A matter of opinion, perhaps.

I never owned one until around eight years ago. It went tits-up after about a year and a half of service, and I just haven't cared to get another. For me it was just more stuff ripe for breakdown to spend batteries on.

25 years, though...shall we bake a cake?

:)

The leafy lanes of North Lincolnshire in the autumn.
Cycling into the breeze with the sun at your back and Joni Mitchell on the walkman.
Perfect.

Loved and thought himself beloved,
From a glad kindness cannot take his eyes.
