I'm not sure what sort of double fail you mean, Ben, so I will compound my ignorance by presuming you don't yet know that in the US there's a famous vegetable shortening brand, Crisco. It's so dominant that the name is often a vernacular stand-in for vegetable shortening in general. As you might accordingly surmise, "Crisco" would be almost de rigueur as a Yank's eggcorn for both "Kisco" and "Cristo". And it's just as well, because "Cristo" would mark one as suspiciously literate, God forbid.

I used to have an 'eggcorn' for team meetings (until the management found out). An enthusiastic 'Excrement' in response to a daft idea was usually misheard by the proponent....

It's a lampoon. You'll note that in the pic the title is rendered The Count of Monte Crisco, so "Dumass" couldn't be more tailor-made as an indictment of the proofreader, plus without the B it remains misspelled, which is in solidarity with the spirit of the whole thing.

I honestly didn't think my point was all that subtle, but maybe I've outdone myself unawares.

Am tempted to cross post to the ‘common language’ thread (again). Looking it up on urbandictionary.com is something of a gotcha.

Looking up what? I don't see anything in my above quoted sentence that could be called regional. We've already established what Crisco is, and even if you don't know, the misspelled title is plain as day. Changing "Dumas" to "Dumass", therefore, makes all the sense in the world - unless you don't know what "dumbass" means. What cause would there be for any doubts?

And yes, if you want a dependably straight answer, do cross off Urban Dictionary from your list.
