Darwin was a grumpy old man.
He wrote the origin of the species while seasick and feeling sorry for himself and wishing he was "fit".
which he was not.
So he said: "the survival of the fittest".
Being fit enough is enough - so he was saying things with great forbearance and great compassion given his personal pain.
He was saying "the last in line dies - all else are fit".
This has been morphed and conflated to: "the survival of the winner".
This is a totally wrong interpretation that seems to be the false-god of humans in this age.
Let me update it to the truth:
It is- "survival of the happiest".
I see it all around me. It works fine.
I think it's about time we all got on with that.
