From an article about a fellow who dared to stop and rescue two wild rabbits amid the terrible California wildfires:

"...most small animals fair well during wildfires..."

I believe the writer was that frequent contributor, Homonymous Bosh.

About a sad Xmas tree in the Eternal City:

"...Romans, who have a knack for giving a good nickname, have dubbed it, "spelacchio." In Italian, that means "mangy," "thread bear" or "balding.""

I would have dropped a couple of commas, but that would be nitpicking.

Tell us something.: I'm a fiddler and, latterly, a fluter. I love the flute. I wish I'd always played it. I love the whistle as well. I'm blessed in having really lovely instruments for all of my musical interests.

I imagine a thread bear is one who is irritable and therefore dangerous because he's been needled in some way.

I suppose a judicious hand should be called an admirable trait when you're out to bruin things.

And this headline is just plain irresponsible:

"Chants of protest drown out any caroling this holiday season at the Capitol"

No, it's not about Grinches. It's merely about the level of activism going on.

[Chewbacca actor] Joonas Suotamo continued his chat with USA Today [about his character's rough handling of a Porg] and explained that Chewie has a natural defensiveness that takes time to get passed.
Makes it sound like a bowel blockage.

And by the way, stop continually referring to Porgs as avians, everyone. Stop it. Right now. Bats fly, but they are no more avians than they are mice. Avians categorically have beaks, not muzzles with teeth, as with bats and Porgs. "Avian" does not vaguely mean "flying creature". It means "bird" specifically, and only that. Bird. Not bat, not Porg. Bird. End of story.

And now there was no doubt that the trees were really moving - moving in and out through one another as if in a complicated country dance. ('And I suppose,' thought Lucy, 'when trees dance, it must be a very, very country dance indeed.')

But we're agreed it's avian?

Oh, no you don't.

Actually, when I was typing up my wee little rant I did wonder, And what shall be said about the platypus, Nano? Hmm? I pondered a bit, and then thought, They don't fly. And that's a bill, not a beak. Soooooo...screw it. My brain hurts.

Next you'll ask me, "What about the ratites?" But I'll grind this into the ground by adding that avians have beaks, but obviously beaks do not make avians.

Never mind all that. Porgs are NOT avians. Behold:

Muzzle + teeth = no avian. So there.
