Haiku (and haikai)

Post by Nanohedron »

Golden leaves, twilight
A cliché of wild goose-calls
But they're going north

(EDIT: For those of you who don't know, true haiku attempts to manifest certain rules about seasonality and "cutting"; haikai follows the same 5-7-5 syllabic format as haiku, but otherwise no such rules apply. In Western pop culture these distinctions tend to be blurred or lost altogether under the umbrella term "haiku", but since I'm embarking on trying for serious haiku lately, I have to make these distinctions. Other than that, no big deal either way, here. I changed the thread title to include haikai because there will inevitably be examples of both and, as happens, some may defy easy categorisation. Knock yourselves out. :) )

Playing Uilleann pipes
Is not really that easy
Can make one surly

Tell us something.: I'm a fiddler and, latterly, a fluter. I love the flute. I wish I'd always played it. I love the whistle as well. I'm blessed in having really lovely instruments for all of my musical interests.

Strong winds, wet and cold
Nests readied among the trees
Good: the furnace works

Curse the hill you climb
Until you reach the summit
Oh how the wind blows

Outside my window
A leafblower whines nonstop;
I think of murder

Fans scream for their teams
Passionately fly colors...
None of it matters

Candy then turkey
With dressing then rum fruitcake
My, how the scale groans
The Walrus

What would a wild walrus whistle if a walrus could whistle wild?

The second mouse may get the cheese but the presentation leaves a lot to be desired.
