It's not quite "Mill-guy". Ach, s'pose it's close enough.Nanohedron wrote:No worries there; I already heard "Errogie" from a native, but even if I hadn't, that one would be intuitive for me. Milngavie being pronounced "Mill-guy", however, is totally not.

I had 2 independent sources, one in print and the other a Scottish lass explaining things on YouTube. They were both in agreement, and I was given no reason to suspect that they were dumbing it down for the likes of me. How do you pronounce it?benhall.1 wrote:It's not quite "Mill-guy". Re: Rhymes with Orange-O
I think I heard it as more 'mulguy' (mul as in pull, not as in mull). But is is more than three decades since I lived north of the wall so pronunciations may have shifted or my memory may have drifted.
In devonshire there is a place called 'Woolfardisworthy'. Just for fun try to guess how it is pronounced......
EDIT: and as for Wiveliscombe (Somerset)......

Re: Rhymes with Orange-O
Sorry. I'm probably being picky. I hear the 'a' before the 'i' sound. It's quick, but it's there. And, to my ear at least, it's distinctly different from "guy". I must admit, I kind of hear an ... how to say ... 'unspoken' 'n' at the end of the 'mill' syllable as well.Nanohedron wrote:I had 2 independent sources, one in print and the other a Scottish lass explaining things on YouTube. Re: Rhymes with Orange-O
The 'official' version is 'woolsery' but the only person I have talked to that actually lived there said that 'the village' was the correct pronounciation. Or 'Woolsy', so Ben was right on the money.

I was just going by the spelling, which seemed reasonably phonetic to me.DrPhill wrote:The 'official' version is 'woolsery' but the only person I have talked to that actually lived there said that 'the village' was the correct pronounciation. Or 'Woolsy', so Ben was right on the money.

And I went by the progression of elements and tried to smush them together. It was sensible to reduce it, either way.
