Uncanny Valley

Post by MTGuru »

I assume that Madame Tussaud's is now using computer assisted techniques in the fabrication of their waxworks? Because, man, the latest figures are just downright creepy.

Or they now have Professor Henry Jarrod on staff.
The Walrus

What would a wild walrus whistle if a walrus could whistle wild?

The second mouse may get the cheese but the presentation leaves a lot to be desired.

I like that Beyonce was so creepy they didn't even want her in the museum. "Listen ... just put her out with the geese. I just can't take her attitude."

Ladies, leave your ducks at home
The lake is full of ganders and there's room to roam
And boys, go find an Anatidaen lass,
'cause it's about 9a.m. and the geese are eating the grass

Hasn't that been the entire point of Mme T all along?
And now there was no doubt that the trees were really moving - moving in and out through one another as if in a complicated country dance. ('And I suppose,' thought Lucy, 'when trees dance, it must be a very, very country dance indeed.')

Tell us something.: Been a fluter, citternist, and uilleann piper; committed now to the way of the harp.

Oh, yeah: also a mod here, not a spammer. A matter of opinion, perhaps.

If I met in the flesh any one of those portrayed, I don't think I could resist the opportunity to say, "You appear so lifelike!"

Yes, but in a different way, I think. Traditional wax figures are creepy because they're not quite right. You recognize them and you can admire the artistic craft. But they look as if they've come through a faulty Star Trek transporter or bad plastic surgery.

These are creepy because they're too right. You expect imperfection in human portraiture, and instead you get photographic perfection. They look like living corpses, or human taxidermy.

This is actually the theme of House of Wax, isn't it? That the figures suddenly become too realistic is the clue that their accuracy is more than skin deep.

Except I suspect that House of Butter wouldn't have the same box-office cachet.

Queenie's whelp looks as creepy and plastic as in real life.
