Album by PJ Tinwhistler

Post by Brus »

Remember the Mallorcan brothers PJ and JJ who posted whistle tunes on youtube for years? Usually with PJ on whistle and JJ on guitar but occasionally other instruments and people were in them. Remember the youtube commentators saying "you guys oughta make an album".

So they did:

Extraordinary story of PJ and JJ Monserrat who have 5.5m YouTube views & new debut album

Well, I'm listening to the CD right now.

If you liked them on youtube, you'll like the album. Obviously the sound quality is better coming from a studio recording, but for the most part what you've heard on youtube is what you get on the album. PJ and JJ, whistle and guitar.

Mostly Irish trad, some Scottish, some Breton, some original compositions. Jigs, reels, airs. Even a guitar solo by JJ for the title tune of the Beware of the Storm set. And an original whistle tune by PJ in Phrygian mode.

The only thing really disappointing to me was that the liner notes don't list the whistles used in each track (the make of the guitar and any alternate tunings would be welcome as well). I thought saw a list on the internet somewhere but I can't find it now.

I heard some of the sample tracks and the album sounds great  . Hopefully, they will get around and get some more exposure by playing live for people.

Getting to see these two evolve musically over the years is definitely an “Extraordinary Story”. I like the youtube clip they put up that shows PJ evolving from a scrawny whistling kid to a burly whistling man right before your eyes. Almost like some sort of Hollywood trickery. What a journey that was captured on youtube!

I hope they keep using youtube to post clips as per normal. Youtube has done for them what radio used to do for new musicians by getting them exposure.

I typically listen to music when I’m on the treadmill. I will have download the album tonight before exercising. I’m sure it’s a homerun that is right on par with their normal youtube postings.
Whistling... It's going to be HUUGE!!

I bought the album. The album is great in some ways. You can get a feeling of "live performance" from the recording. The music is not well polished, but still very very good! What I was confused is that PJ used a black low whistle in the whole album (could someone tell me what is it?), but on their Youtube channel, he has used various whistles. In all, I like the album very much!
