Some new old kwelas

I participated in a local radio show and we played quite a few kwelas (on shellac 78s) that I doubt you'll find anywhere else on the internet:

I'd love to hear your thoughts on the music. There's some really nice jazzy stuff that you don't tend to hear in later recordings. I suspect there might be more kwelas in the box that these 78s came from, so if you would like to hear more, then please tell Greg, whose show it is, via Mixcloud or the station web site

Maybe he'll agree to do a Part 2 :)

Love that kwela!

Just goes to show how the best music comes from the most repressed people. For years the SA government pushed folks down, trying to stamp them into the ground and their souls just opened up and gave the world all this beautiful music. Happy and light, a joy to listen to! And, of course, it's played on what is, without a doubt, the happiest sounding musical instrument of all, the tin whistle!

What I'd really like is for all the whistle kwela to be ported to MP3 or CD -- I'd pay for an album of kwela music, either on CD or via Amazon for example.

Cheers

If you search this forum under Kwela you should find links to several downloadable albums.

Best wishes.

Thanks Steve! Looks like a couple of nice kwela albums that were once available here are now no longer, but I'm sure they might be found elsewhere. But if these (not quite so old) 78s contain tunes not found in other albums, I still think it would be worthwhile collecting thóse into a new album.

Cheers

I'm up for it if you are ... Let's get some more of those great Township 78s out there!

Interestingly I was looking up Kwela music on YouTube yesterday and came across this guy, Jack 'Big Voice' Lerole playing a tune I'm familiar with (a version by Bert Kaempfert was used in a TV ad here)

Anyway I posted about him on Instagram, and Kwela music in general, and got a dialogue with his son, Jack junior!
And then I had a quick go myself, tho I had to transpose to D (he was playing in F)

The Kachamba brothers from Malawi are amazing. Hopefully the trove has some of their stuff. What a fantastic find.
