Behold the prototype!

Head joint is together with the body. Tuning set screw not completed yet.
1 key mounted w/o spring yet.
Headjoint seal seems to work well.
So far it has good sound.

But flat keys will probably not allow any note bending.

Made from Cedar planks.

It is a Low-Low-D, 146.83Hz an octave below Low-D Whistles.

Interesting - basically the same concept as the Paetzold bass/great bass/contrabass recorders. It'd be nice to hear some sound files. I just wonder though how useful such a design is for the whistle's primary repertoire of solo dance music. Bass recorders are generally used in consort, not as solo instruments.

Looks lovely.

Funny, I was thinking about you earlier, Daniel. Basically because I've just acquired a Bass A Alba whistle, which has re-ignited my enthusiasm for low whistles. And then I was thinking "Hmmm ... if you want really low whistles, Daniel Bingamon's your man. Wonder what's happened to him?" So, a very timely post here. :)

People are finding places for them. Sales of Bass Whistles and Chromatic whistles have more than doubled in the past three years.

Of course, the designs are becoming more refined with time as well. In ITM. maybe not as fast but some have used it as the solo instrument, thus "Bass Solo!" (thinking of silly drum joke) has become a reality.

Amplified with some reverb, much like NAF's is a good non traditional use of the instrument.

What I've learned from this design:
With the round PVC pipe basswhistle, the way the keys close gives some note bending with a little practice.

The flat wood keys allow some shading of the holes but not enough for good bending of note. Maybe I need to invent some internal volume tweaking "Whammy Bar" for it.

Daniel, you are without a doubt the most courageous whistle maker on the planet.

Best wishes,
Jerry

Very nice Daniel. Have you solved the "Flat Pitch" problem caused by internal air pressure pushing the aircolumn into the bore corners? Epoxy filler to make the bore more cylindrical? A Dolmetsch "echo key"? More details please! were are HUNGRY!

[Thread revival. - Mod]

did you ever finish this project? would be nice to hear some soundfiles if you recorded any. I'm curious to hear how it differentiates from a Paetzold. :) did you play any irish music on it? never heard any irish songs played on the paetzold either, so that would be nice to experience!
