Whistle - Not like riding a bike!
So, due to my uncontrollable fascination with various instruments I have neglected my whistles for probably a couple of years really. Mandolin, tenor banjo, ukulele and fiddle have all kind of taken turns in monopolising my practice time.
End result? I dabble with plenty of instruments, but am not very good at any. I have fun though, and scoring high marks out of 10 isn't a goal of mine, so I have been happy.
Trouble is, now I am picking up my whistles again (the instrument at which I was actually ok for a while) I find that I have 10 thumbs. I have completely lost my coordination and feel for the instrument. I can no longer execute a roll of any kind. I stumble to cross finger a C natural in the middle of a tune and my half-holing is no longer accurate.
In short, it's as if I never learned to play the dratted thing.
I've written a song for a charity project I've been invited to participate in and I want to include a whistle part in my recording. At this rate, it ain't going to be a very good part.
I suppose what I'm really trying to say is... grrr.
Thank you. That is all. carry on.

And whether the skin be black or white as the snow.
Of kith and of kin we are one, be it right, be it wrong.
As long as our hearts beat true to the lilt of a song.

My sympathies!
Just keep one on the loo for those quiet moments...
Shame it is so hard to play the whistle riding the bike!

Re: Whistle - Not like riding a bike!
With all those instruments on one recording no one would hear a bad note or two on the whistle

Yeah, but the bad notes aren't just on the whistle...Pammy wrote:With all those instruments on one recording no one would hear a bad note or two on the whistle

Hi Budd!
How're you doing, bro?
@hans: Heck, I wonder if I could still ride a bike. I haven't tried for decades.

Well then you are in the perfect position to test if your premise of the topic subject actually holds!buddhu wrote:@hans: Heck, I wonder if I could still ride a bike. I haven't tried for decades.

Kind of painted myself into a corner there, didn't I? And the only way out is by bike...hans wrote:[...] Well then you are in the perfect position to test if your premise of the topic subject actually holds!

Well you can claim "mitigating circumstances":
a) the weather, causing icy road condition no re-learner should face.
b) you are lying in the ditch, as your location says, and are probably a danger to other road users if you climb out of it.

Look on the bright side: even if you're out of practice, you can still probably play the whistle a LOT better than Jake Shimabukuru...

Have you thought about buying another whistle? Rolls and half holing was notoriously bad on pre-2010 whistles.

DON'T! Just... don't, ok?
I am very nearly free of WhOA, however I do still have the equivalent mandolin and fiddle syndromes - and no money. Last thing I need is for whistle lust or ukulele lust to kick in again.
Edit: Dixon trads look nice...
