Unexpected free whistle!

Post by nimbles »

I bought a second hand copy of the Bill Ochs book on ebay and it arrived... with an old high f generation tin whistle! I am ecstatic. The people I know are less so ("it's even *more* high pitched?!").

Tell us something.: I'm a fiddler and, latterly, a fluter. I love the flute. I wish I'd always played it. I love the whistle as well. I'm blessed in having really lovely instruments for all of my musical interests.

You haven't got room for a banjo and an accordion have you?

The Generation Bb is a lot kinder to the ears of your friends than the f to be honest...

Learn on your D. Once you have breath control pretty well under control, that high F won't sound nearly so shrill.

I will. For the sake of my neighbours if nothing else. I like the sound of the generation compared to my sweetone. It's nice to have a comparison.

I picked up a Generation F about five months ago, I adore it. I'm using it now for the Legally Blonde musical pit orchestra haha

My Generation F has a pure, beautiful tone and plays like butter. Very different from my Generation G, which is just one tone higher and equally smaller, but it's shrill compared to the F (and anyway too small for me to play, unlike the F).

Doesn't that make it hard to keep hold of?

Badum tish.

What's the smallest highest whistle you can get? That would be fun for driving people mad.

I'm not finding the threads where we have discussed this question in the past but there are two sides to the answer.

There is the practical matter of what is the highest key whistle which can be fingered effectively by a normal human hand. The answer to that seems to be the high G whistle judging by commercial offerings. Several makers have made those, Schultz and Burke among them. Generation offers one which I would suggest as a starting (and perhaps finishing) foray into the high pitched realm. They can be sweet or annoying as you might expect.

Practical matters being set aside, the physics of whistle design do scale rather well. I recall photos of a nifty little thing pitched an octave above a regular high D whistle. It was made from the metal body of a ball point pen. The maker had made several whistles with similar pen parts in various pitches. I saw one like it for sale on eBay some years back but I did not win it. I have no idea if/how they played.

I also recall a very small wooden whistle, possibly willow, that was shown here on the forum with a little bit of Sally Gardens played on it, I do not remember the itch but it was quite high. It was more of a curiosity than anything else. Thom Larson may have been the conduit for those. Maybe someone here still has one of those.

That is amazing. A lady at my knitting group (don't laugh) has a tiny harmonica that was a pendant but is fairly playable.

I had one of those harmonica thingies. Surprisingly workable. I wonder where it's gone. :-?

Yes, it's the Hohner Little Lady. And it's very playable within its 1 octave range. I keep one in my pocket as a very handy pitch pipe. And to annoy people.
