WTB: Wooden Whistle $125 or Less **Yes, I'm a Cheapo!**

Post by Suzie »

Ok, a friend is getting some things for my little gremlins [rabbits] for Christmas and has been searching for a wooden whistle to play music w/ her husband (he does piano and I THINK guitar). She was wanting an Abell but said they're about $300 and I'm not having much luck on eBay finding anything like this and frankly don't know much about whistles! *guilty!* I suppose I will search for a D whistle and probably pref. low D but I don't think it will really matter. New would be preferred but used would be do-able as well since I can polish the wood and clean and sterilize it, etc. to make it like new.

Maybe I can get something organized with her hubby to go 1/2 & 1/2 or something to maybe go UP TO about $300 but IDEALLY I wouldn't like to spend more than $100-125 for my half but maybe could work out something with someone here, etc.

I suggested she get a tunable Susato plastic whistle as I like those a bunch but she said she wanted something wood. Any suggestions? Thanks! -Suzie

Sweetheart would have been my first response, too, but check these out also:

Not under $120, but these 2 makers are the cheapest I'm aware of.
By the way, I don't think you'll find a wooden low D even in the $300 range, unless it's a used Sweetheart or there's something that flew under my radar.

Of the ones I've tried, the Sweetheart is really excellent. I do hear good things about the O'Brien, but haven't tried them.

O'Brien's are superb - I used to own a Blackwood Rover... It was elegant, convenient (shirt-pocket leather case), and had a sound that was great. Only sold it to help fund the "dark" side (flute).

My question is: why wood? There are a lot of really nice whistles in other materials out there. I own a Burke DBN (D, Brass, Narrow bore) and a Carey Parks. Both are really, REALLY nice. The Burke has a pure, clean tone that cuts through without being offensive. It is my "church" whistle. The Parks is the "bang around" whistle that takes apart into three pieces and has a "muffler".

She just wants a wooden one... I think Susato's would be more than sufficient to get her started out in the right direction but she said she was on the prowl for wood bc of the tone or something like that *shrug* Thanks for all the input thus far!

Here's another plug for O'Brien. I'm the one who bought Pat's Rover. I liked it enough that I had David make a 'C' body as well. They have displaced my other whistles, (except that I still play my Burke DAS in sessions for it's inherent "speed factor"). If you want wood, seriously consider a whistle by David O'Brien!
