Loubistok - whistle identification squad, can you help me?

Post by hoopy mike »

Hi

There's some sound clips of Loubistok - a Ukrainian folk band at:
http://www.sternsmusic.com/discography/2607

I really like their sound, especially the whistle. There's some pics at:

(sorry about the annoying pop-ups from that site)

Can anyone identify the whistle?

Looks and sounds like an Eastern European frula-type whistle. In this case, a Ukrainian dentsivka, I'd guess. You can see at least 7 holes, with the fipple presumably on the underside, which is fairly typical. It could also possibly be a sopilka or floyarka, which is a notched flute. But from the recording and from the embouchure in the pix, I'd say a duct flute / whistle.

Nice group ... cute, too! :-)
