Don't let the size of the book freak you out.

The whistle/flute book is the one to get by the way.

There will be plenty in there you will not understand. Not right away.

You'll find that it will be valuable book to own.

Lots of good stuff in there.

I go back to it often enough.

The best part is the disks that come with.

Its true that if you don't read music that this book will be even more difficult but I land firmly in the "learn to read standard notation" camp.

At least basically.

How difficult it is to learn FACE and EGBDF?

Aural tradition smaural tradition. You ever read Fahrenheit 451? :D

Two hours tops and you'll have a whole other world to draw from.

So many tunes are out there in ABC format and those can be converted to standard notation in PDF form.

Opp... sorry for the mini rant. ;)

Perry is a good name BTW... don't hear it much.

I spell mine a little differently.

:)

That book sounds like a 2nd tutor book I will get after ive learned a bit.

One last question before I take the plunge.

Some whistles are thicker and heavier then others like the differance between the Dixon Traditionad D Brass which is light and the Dixon Solid Brass High Whistle which is alot heavier then the Trad Brass, Plastic or Aluminum bodys.

Is there a big differance in the sound or how these heavier whistles play?

Each of those play differently in terms of sound and back pressure.

Not enough that you'll notice most likely.

I have a Dixon Trad Nickel. Its really light and you can play if for hours.

Its not that loud either so its good for those around you.

Go for light. Why not?

The Dixons are easy players and are actually very easy to overblow but you'll have to get used to something at some point so just get one an start playing!

;) :D

I've enjoyed reading this topic and others related to newbies. I just ordered my first whistle, a Jerry Freeman tweaked Mellow Dog D that Jerry was selling on eBay. Hope to have it in about 2 days.

Now comes the daunting task of LEARNING the darn thing. I'll be looking to all your wise suggestions and comments in the weeks and months to follow, as I try to tackle this instrument.

Welcome kptom. I find it not daunting to learn but fun and the more I read on this site the more I learn how much I dont know.lol But its still fun. The hard part is not learning how to play, its finding the time to practice. Good luck and enjoy.
