For larger whistles, I find that an Andromeda ring actually works best:

Image

Look for A-ring size #12-bazillion in any Home Depot. Also available by mail order, but with a shipping surcharge for excess mass.

Disclaimer: I take no responsibility for any possible gravitational or interdimensional side effects. If your whistle collapses to a quantum singularity, this may affect tone and intonation. Your light-yearage may vary.

Thanks to Aanvil for taking this photo with what was apparently a very large camera.

Denny, eat your heart out. :-)

Anyone care to calculate the resonant frequency of the Andromeda whistle, assuming that all of space was fill with air at standard sea level pressure...?

Bought my first Susato last week. A non-tunable VSB D and let me say never having heard one in person I was just a little unprepared for what I heard (it's a whole lot louder than my other whistles). However I tried the o-ring tweak and was pleasently suprised. Thanks for the info. I'm sure if I ever get another one it will get the same treatment!

MT Guru;

Thanks so much for the tip. I tried it both on my Burke D and Susato. Actually I experimented and put 4 o rings on the burke and it really balanced out the octaves and made my Burke so much more fun to play and especially record. In recording I could not get the right balance between the high and lows and now have found it. Thank you!

I'm so happy I found this thread!

I tried a #12 o-ring on my V-series heads and they are just too big. A #9 did the trick just great tho. It's possible a #10 would work as well, but I didn't try it.

Maybe I put it on wrong, or maybe I didn't get the right o-ring (Home Depot in Ottawa didn't have a numbering system like everyone else seems to), or maybe I'm really bad at hearing these changes, but I found it didn't work on my Susatos at all. I still really like them as they are, but I find them a bit too loud when playing with a smaller group of people trying to blend.

Yes, the size is not critical, as long as the O-ring can stretch to fit. It doesn't really reduce the overall volume, but creates more backpressure on the top notes so that you don't have to overblow them to get them to speak.

This would be an interesting thread for someone coming in on the last few posts....

• Yes, the size is not critical, as long as the O-ring can stretch to fit

• Maybe I put it on wrong

• I tried a #12 o-ring on my V-series heads and they are just too big

• Size DOES matter!

• I put the small o ring on my susato d and it hums in the upper ocataves

• The odd sizes I had around the house didn't work well, but I never got a hum

• Its unique fully adjustable design and modern polymer construction both increases backpressure, reduces stressful high frequencies, while boosting sex drive and baseline metabolism. Apply directly to the headjoint

.....this is great stuff!

Anyone tried playing the O-ring without the whistle tweak?

I thought of that...but couldn't think of a less dirty alternative, so I left it. I trusted people to be mature and assume the intended meaning....sigh...
