To be honest - it works! No really, I can play it. I have to add that I have very thin fingers and....well....it's not really fun to play and you are right: It was actually a christmas present and more a joke than a real instrument.

Anyway, I've heard that it has actually been played in real orchestras a few centurys ago to simulate bird chirping. But I won't vouch for that...

Hi. This is my first post and I thought I'd share my collection of whistles. I'm new at tin whistles (three weeks) and WhOA Disorder kicked in quickly. I'm primarily a guitar/plectrum banjo/bass player with a root in rock music but an interest in all others. Thanks to my current interest in all things Jethro Tull, I started playing the flute in February and the tin whistle recently. Now I'm listening to all things Irish on YouTube and reading all things Chiff and Fipple.

In my collection I got a brass Generation set from Jerry Freeman and I want to thank him! I can be assured when I squeak and squonk the problem is me. I enjoy the two Clarkes and the Feadog Nickel (All D) whistles as well. I'm sure my collection will grow but for now I have to just learn.

My own modest collection:


Left to right:
- Nickel Gen Bb, void filled with wax.
- Noah Herbison Laughing Whistle, slightly tweaked. Doesn't get played nearly as much as it deserves.
- Acorn D, void filled. My favorite session whistle, easy-playing and penetrating enough to cut through the noise.
- A ... thing ... sold under the Guinness label - maybe by Walton? I hate this one, it sounds bad and isn't in tune with itself. If you squint, you can see the black electrician's tape wrapped around the end, that brought it roughly in tune but didn't do anything for the raspy sound.
- Hall Crystal Flute in G. Neat sound, I like it.
- Boehm flute by Yamaha (Allegro 471 - has a nice big sound, I recommend it)

Not shown:

Any of the bamboo flutes I've made (they keep cracking on me, I have an idea to fix it but haven't yet tried it out.)

Here's an update to my ITM instruments. I found a Walton's Little Black Whistle at the Annapolis Irish Festival in July. I've also added two whistles from James Becker, a high D and a low D. When I started playing Irish Music three months ago I wanted to switch to the Irish flute but couldn't justify the cost of a new flute. So I made the PVC flute in the photo (thanks to Doug Tipple for the specs!) It actually plays well (the thickness of the schedule 40 pipe is acceptable for playing around but the wall of the embouchure hole should be thicker.) With the satisfaction of playing the keyless Irish flute and with my wife's blessing, I got a Walt Sweet Shannon flute.

I've been playing the tin whistle for three months now and I'm quite satisfied with my progress. I concentrate more on flute progress currently but play both daily. Blayne Chastain's website is perfect for me. I do plan to get both of Grey Larsen's books and cherish his opinions. Grey's website has free excerpts and I recommend them for all who haven't read them. I enjoy the heck out of reading the whistle, flute and trad music forums here and hope it continues for a long time.
