First recording with my new Löfgren low Eb whistle

Post by krabben »

I aquired a löfgren low Eb a few weeks ago. It plays and feels similar to overton/goldie whistles, but has it's own wonderful tone. I don't really showcase the second octave much in this recording, so perhaps I'll post a quick video playing some scales later. The tune is a slow version of "Rideé" from Michael McGoldricks album "Fused". Have a listen, hope you'll enjoy it!

Tell us something.: I play high and low whistle with Traditional Irish Music being my focus of interest. I love Irish music and consider it as a direct connection to my Irish heritage. I enjoy participation in whistle tours, chatting with other players, and learning much from the many talented folks that frequent C & F.

Krabben,
Super nice work lad!!! I have listened to Tinwhistler's rendition of Hector The Hero numerous times and must say your is on par with his excellent playing. The whistle itself has a great tone so there's another on my whistle wish list. Again, nice work onmthe musicianship from both yourself and your guitarist. :thumbsup:

But it's not 'A beautiful scottish waltz' (Scott Skinner actually marked it 'LAMENT')! :-?

Thanks, Cayden. And yes, you are right Peter. I just now changed the description. I just called it a waltz since I play it in 3/4. There are many rendations of this tune around today, but it seems the original was actually written to be played in 6/8.

Interesting... is that his own MS? Because it's just plain 'LAMENT' in The Scottish Violinist (his published collection), although it's also headed by this verse:

O wail for the mighty in battle;
Loud lift ye the coronach strain;
For Hector, the Hero, of deathless fame,
Will never come back again.

Edit: ah, yes...

Interesting how Hector the Hero makes it into The Scottish Violinist when that particular collection was first published in 1900, so guess it must have been revised/updated at some time!

Great stuff! Really love your relaxed approach to the music. Lots of stuff around played way to fast. Man,
the guitarplayer looks like you!:-P

To get back to why I said that, afraid I'm still hearing it as a bit jolly... nothing wrong with it musically (and you clearly love the tune), but sadly (!) still too jolly for Hector the Hero for me.

I do get what you mean. The first version I heard of "Hector the Hero" was from the playing of PJ(tinwhistler). So naturally, when I play it on the whistle, I play it a lot like him. I've later come too appreciate other more traditional aproaches. Jenna Reid playing it on the fiddle for example, is wonderful.

Krabben - I could not agree more! Jenna Reid is a phenomenal fiddle player and does a particularly soulful rendition of Hector The Hero. :thumbsup:
