Fairytale of New York

Post by raindog1970 »

Being the huge Pogues fan that I am, I always said I was going to start transcribing Spider Stacy's whistle parts.
I finally got started today, and I figured there was no better place to start than with the only Christmas song The Pogues ever recorded.
So here it is: Fairytale of New York (AKA Christmas in the Drunk Tank).

Keep up the good work.
What kind of whistle does Spider usually plays.

In the photos and video footage I've seen, he has been playing a metal whistle with a plastic mouthpiece.
I've never been able to see the brand label clearly, but it's definitely not a Generation.
I'm guessing either an Oak or a Waltons, but that's just a guess based on the brand label being either round or oval... I can't really even be sure about that.
Definitely a cheapie though, not anything fancy.

Well, I stand corrected!
I recently ran across a photo of Spider Stacy taken back in 1998 and the whistle he's playing sure looks like an Overton to me.
What do the rest of you think?

On the cover of 'if I should fall from grace with god' however the whistle is definitely a generation (I have the lp which makes the details of the photograph a lot more identifiable compared to the CDs)

It definitely sounds like a generation, too, on that whole album. I guess it's hard to tell after mixing and mastering and all that, but his playing doesn't have the round and ploppy sound of an Overton.

Sounds like an Overton is the ideal whistle for playing in the toilet...
It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that schwing
