Freeman Tweaked Generation Low F and Low D?

Post by DeTerminator »

Hello whistlers!

I see on Ebay that Mr. Freeman has a Tweaked Generation Low F available now, as well as his wider bore Tenor G (coming my way!). I'm thinking that the Low F is using that same wider bore tube as the Tenor G, but not sure. Also I saw mention of a Low D he has available, but did not see that listed. Anybody have more info on the tube size? I did see Mr. Freeman's post on his wider bore Tenor G earlier in the year, so my question might be answered by revisiting that.

Tell us something.: Can play several instruments at an unimpressive level. Currently most interested in whistling with a side of acoustic guitar.

I have neither and cant really give you any info found outside that other post you mentioned. But I can say that both use a tweaked Gen Bb head. So while bigger tube size will help, they are going to be quieter, easy overblowing low whistles. If thats what you want they should be good. If you want a strong low end and volume like an MK, Goldie, Etc they likely wont get the job done.

Thanks for your reply, Narzog! Good to point that out about the Generation Bb head. Should be some interesting whistles, should there be a a low F and D coming up. which will maybe fill a different niche for those wanting a quieter instrument. I have his small bore Tenor G and A, and enjoy them both for what they are. I turn to my Burkes for a different playing experience, for sure.

Hi Avanutria, also thanks for your reply! Let's see if Mr. Freeman will offer more on his newer tweaked models here on the forum. Otherwise I'll send him a message. :)

I had missed this post by Mr. Freeman made right before the post on his new wide bore Low G, in which he explains the latest versions of his whistles that he has available for purchase, as of mid-May of this year:

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=113401

No mention of a Low D from him in that post. That I saw in an Ebay description of what he offers, and I suspect it is not true. But he does describe well what he does have in the above post, as well as give links to noteworthy players that are playing them.

I would like to request that people not make assumptions about characteristics and not pronounce judgments against whistles they've never seen or played. In fact I would request that the moderators of this board make a rule asking that reviews be based on actual experience with the whistle being discussed. I realize you are are the world's authorities on everything there is to know about whistles, but sometimes some of you do overreach a bit in posting comments that are purely speculative and subject to pretty drastic inaccuracies that may be taken seriously by some readers. I believe it is in the interest of all visitors to the Chiff and Fipple website and to Chiff and Fipple's reputation generally if every effort is made to ensure that misleading information is not posted here.

I have to make a living, and I make very little on these whistles. I struggle every month to pay for my housing and food. Gratuitous, uninformed comments that discourage people from purchasing my instruments (out of what motivation I have a hard time comprehending) are rather mean-spirited and I'm sorry to say, sour my opinion of Chiff and Fipple generally, which is why I post here much more rarely than I used to do.

Kevin Crawford, among others, loves the new wider bore low G tweaked Generation. You can hear him playing one by clicking on the corresponding YouTube link below. I've an order from Pancelticpiper for one that will go in the mail soon. Likely when he receives it he'll put up a firsthand review.

The low F, the wider bore low G and the alto A are all standard bore whistles and they are not quiet whistles. It is simply incorrect that the use of a modified Bb Generation headjoint means the whistle will necessarily be quieter than other whistles of the same key. The low D is, in fact, a quiet whistle but that is because the tonebody has the same bore diameter as the low F, which is the largest diameter a modified Bb headjoint can accommodate and remain correctly in tune across the registers. The low D is, therefore, a narrow bore whistle, which is the reason it is quieter. It has nothing to do with the fact that it uses a modified Bb headjoint.

The descriptions and reviews I provide are clear in describing such characteristics of each of my various whistles.

There is also a (very popular) narrow bore low G whistle. It is quieter than the wider bore G that I introduced recently, but I wouldn't characterize the narrow bore low G as a "quiet" whistle. It is a little quieter but I would still say it is of medium loudness, whereas the wider bore low G (yes, with a modified Bb Generation headjoint) I would characterize as at least on the louder end of medium. I don't know how loud a low G whistle can be, but to my ear that whistle is fairly loud.

Below are descriptions, links to YouTube videos and ordering information for all my whistles.

Thanks and best wishes,
Jerry

Freeman Whistles Descriptions and Ordering Information

MELLOW DOG Wide Body, Pure & Full Voiced

Wide-body whistle, bigger sound, takes more push at the top of the upper register. For some who like to lean into a whistle, this is desirable (e.g., Cillian Vallely, who praises the fact that you can play a Mellow Dog more dynamically than with most whistles ). For others, who may prefer a whistle that takes more subtle breath (e.g., Kathleen Conneely), the Blackbirds, Bluebirds and tweaked Generations may be more suited. Most people are comfortable with all of my whistles and easily switch back and forth among them.

-- D Mellow Dog = $49.45

-- Mellow Dog D/C set (1 top, 2 tonebodies) = $59.45

Tweaked D Clarke Original = $49.45

Clean, focused voicing that showcases the Clarke’s ethereal, "old school" pure-drop traditional tone. Much more comfortable breath requirement compared to untweaked. The block has been reshaped to create a proper beak for a more comfortable embouchure.

BLUEBIRD

Sweet and Pure Generation-Based Voicing (Depending on availability may come with brass or nickel tonebody. If you have a preference, please specify):

-- D or Eb Bluebird = $42.95

Bluebirds are tweaked with the same specifications as Blackbirds. Based on a Generation whistlehead, they retain some of the Generation character in a whistle that's voiced significantly purer/sweeter, as you can hear.

In honor of Iarla McMahon, age 10, from County Down, winning the 2014 All Ireland under 12 whistle championship playing a Freeman tweaked Bluebird, L.E. McCullough, 1976 All Ireland Champion in new dance tunes composition, composed this double jig: "Freeman's Tweaked Bluebird," which he plays on his own Freeman tweaked Bluebird.

I don’t have a sample of an Eb Bluebird. The D Bluebird sample is representative, though.

TWEAKED GENERATION Classic Traditional Voicing:

-- Brass Enat (E major) Tweaked Generation = $61.95

I don’t have samples of an Eb tweaked Generation. The Ds in the videos above are representative, however. You can clearly hear the difference in voicing between my tweaked D and the off-the-shelf Generation, and Sean mentions it when he says the off-the-shelf Generation sounds “raspier.”

I’ve voiced my tweaked Generations based on the classic, pre-1980s voicing, which was noticeably purer, more birdlike than current Generations. The video features a bluetop nickel whistle. The difference in sound compared to a redtop brass tweaked Generation will be too subtle to tell from a recording. I would consider that example to be reliable for either brass or nickel tweaked D/Eb Generations.

-- Bnat Tweaked Generation = $61.95

-- Wider Bore/Bigger Sound Tenor G Tweaked Generation = $99.00

This is a new design with a standard bore (the orignial design is a narrow bore). The new, standard bore key of tenor G tweaked Generation has a fuller, stronger, louder tone and stronger bottom end while retaining the sweet, velvety high end and good balance across registers.

This is the same design as the new tenor G tweaked Generation, with a full, strong tone and strong bottom end with a sweet, velvety high end and good consistency across registers.

Byung Ho Kwon demonstrates a Freeman tweaked low F Generation whistle. The first part of the video is without reverb and is short so I’ve repeated it a second time. The second part of the video has a little added reverb and showcases Byung Ho Kwon’s exquisite playing. (He is South Korea’s 2018 pop Recording Artist of the Year.)

-- LOW D TWEAKED GENERATION = $99.00 (inquire about international postage rates)

This is a quiet low whistle with comfortable air requirement and a rich, velvety tone. Nicely balanced between octaves. Many have commented that the upper register is especially pleasing.
