Tell us something.: I have been playing low whistle since 2003 and am interested in joining because I would like to be with a community of people who play the same instrument. I live in the United States and don't know anyone else who plays. My interest is to get better and just engage with this community.

I'll second the Dixon in polymer. Good mellow sound and comparably good playing qualities compared to other inexpensive whistles. It's tunable to boot. If you are looking at higher quality, I have a A. Karavaev whistle that I think has good playing quality in F with the polymer head and aluminum body. It plays loud but not shrill and is in tune throughout the registers. I have thought about ordering one in high D. I like the way his sound in high D in his demonstration video:

While I don't have any experience with another recommendation, it seems the cocobolo whistles made by Eric the Flutemaker sound pretty good, at least over the internet. To me it has a mellow, clear, flute like sound. Here is a link:
