Tell us something.: I've been playing whistles since 2010. I love how varied whistles are in their design, construction, tone, and handling. Though I've largely settled on what I enjoy playing, I'm still a sucker for an interesting new design.

Tunes by Key for tuning

Post by AngelicBeaver »

Hi all,

I have a lot of different whistle keys, and I've found playing along with tracks to be a very natural way to check the tuning. Tracks in D and G and A are easy to come by, but does anyone have good tracks that would work for the less common keys, like Ab, F#, etc? Ideally, they'd cover the full range of a whistle (up to the high B equivalent).

Currently, I use an album of session tunes for D, 'The Immigrant' played by Joanie Madden for C whistles, and 'Fly' by Brian Finnegan for alto A whistles, and 'Ellie Goes West' for E. Does anyone have a favorite track played in a less common key?

Thanks,
Nathaniel

Hey Nathaniel, check out Bayview by Project Smok. Toria's is played on an F#. There are couple other interesting keys in there.

Wow! That's exactly the sort of thing I was looking for (and a group I'd never heard of before as a bonus).
Toria's is particularly good for tuning, since it has so many slow parts. Good for noodling too.

The Fear Polkas is another one of their tracks that sounds like it's on the F#:

Tell us something.: Hi Nano. I was somewhat active on the Chiffboards maybe 5 or 6 years ago, participating in several whistle tours (Bracker, Hardy, Ellis). I took a break from the Chiffboards, and music mostly, for several years because I got a full-time job and had a baby. I'm easing back into the music, though (which is great, I missed it). It's good to be back!

I use pitch-shifting software to adjust favorite tuning-reference tracks to match the key of whatever whistle I'm evaluating. On desktop I use a Chrome extension https://chrome.google.com/webstore/deta ... ejda?hl=en that works great with Youtube and YouTube Music. I've also had good results with the mobile apps Amazing Slow Downer and Music Speed Changer.

Not sure if this is the kind of thing you are looking for, but I like these two tracks played on low F whistles:

Phil Hardy: May Morning Dew:

Erwan Menguy: Yellow Flowers:

And these on Bb by Kevin Crawford: Dear Irish Boy, The Hole in the Boat, Sally Sloane's, The Tinker's Frolic:
