Kerry Optima Alto F

Post by scottie »

Considering this Optima Alto F and was wondering would anyone know the length and I.D. of this whistle? Phil does not have any specs on his site. I own an Alto F bamboo flute by William Miller, has very good tone but it seems to take a lot of air. Looking to buy an F whistle with good clear tone. Thanks for any help.

Tell us something.: I am a longtime piper, and have added in the few years a bunch of Irish whistles and smallpipes to my collection. Looking for new instruments and like-minded people!

Overall length is 19-5/8", length without headpiece is 15-7/8", ID is roughly (sorry no calipers) 3/4".

Thank you Peter for taking the time to give me some specs on that unit. That size will work perfectly for me. I sure do appreciate it. From the videos I have seen Phil sure can may that model sing. I have to keep reminding myself he is a professional player. How do you like yours?

I'm really impressed with it! I have had five of Phil's different whistles and the Optima is amazing in terms of playability and tone. It's definitely more of a free blower so be prepared with some lung volume for this and the low D Optima but it is a phenomenal instrument and holds its own again whistles twice or triple the cost. Also I wish more makers offered eased (scalloped? indented?) finger hole options. Especially for larger whistles it's nice to have that little bit of help with hole coverage, especially when you are starting out.

Tell us something.: I am learning the high C whistle and hope to get advice vfrom more experienced people.
I also purched a low C whistle but I am not yet good enough to do much with it. I have a couple of high D whistles, one high C whistle and as I said one low D.

I am also thinking about the Kerry Optima Tunable Alto in F.
Either that or The Susato KildareLow F.
Both similar price, Anyone in a position to compare them against each other.

Tell us something.: Can play several instruments at an unimpressive level. Currently most interested in whistling with a side of acoustic guitar.

I have neither. But susato are known for having a very distinct sound so if you dont want that sound you dont want to go susato. A perk to the susato is if you like them you can buy bodies for the same headjoint and save some $ on a few other keys.
