- Tell us something.: I'm a fiddler and, latterly, a fluter. I love the flute. I wish I'd always played it. I love the whistle as well. I'm blessed in having really lovely instruments for all of my musical interests.

I would think it would be child dependent. If the kid can be taught not to run with the whistle in his/her mouth, then s/he's ready.

That is an issue because my experience with the kids whistling is they want to MARCH. We don't do that with the youngest/beginners.chas wrote:I would think it would be child dependent. If the kid can be taught not to run with the whistle in his/her mouth, then s/he's ready.

Yeah, when I was a kid I had several of those bamboo whistle-type things. I never had a problem, but we had an incident with my nephew, who fell with the thing in his mouth. It cut his hard palate, which was lucky.ytliek wrote:That is an issue because my experience with the kids whistling is they want to MARCH. So I give really little ones ocarinas. They gum them, I dunno if any have ever played them or even gotten a sound.

Thanks again for all the replies folks, it has helped with my decision, which is to hold off for a few years.
