I was putting my Killarney head on my Sindt tubes today...A thought occured to me...apart from the flush brass pins on the Sindt and, well, the sound and other slight subtleties, they are practically identical..Sindt puts a very tiny JS on the back of his heads...if someone were to copy that engraving and file down the pins, it would be extremely difficult to say it wasn't a Sindt...now I know this would be very dishonest and I certainly would never do such a thing.. .I'm just curious if anyone has the same "concerns".

Killarneys are clearly a copy of the Sindt design. There's also a Chinese maker selling sindt copies on Aliexpress.

I have a Sindt A and two killarney Ds and they play differently. The Sindt requires half holing for the C natural, for example, while the Killarneys don't. The Sindt is more free-blowing. So they are't identical. But again clearly Killarney adopted a design Sindt was known for, or at least the look of it.


There's a limited number of ways to make a fipple, so unless John Sindt has a patent on something, Killarney is in the clear. It's possible--I have no idea--that Sindt's design may be based on something earlier that was similar.

I bought Killarney's originally partly because they were made in Ireland, and then got a Sindt partly because I wanted to honor the guy who came up with the design. If you want a Sindt you have to be prepared to wait for it. Killarney deserves credit for making a good whistle easily available

As far as I understand whistle1000, s/he's concerned that somebody would sell a Killarney after some small modifications as a Sindt...

My first thought was: We'll have to get Phil Spector right on a Trad version Wall of Sound to keep out that horde of illegal Sindts. . .

Allie has some odd stuff for sale. There are Waltons and Oaks and such with names like Slade, Moon Lady, Juniper Mist, etc.
Too, there are some fairly original looking whistles. It's a no fly zone for me. If they're going to knock off a Sindt, you'd think they would at least figure out the top from the bottom.

I posted about the backwards whistles a while ago. The really odd thing is the Sindt/Killarney copies they are selling aren't cheap. They're about the same as a Killarney. So you'd think they would at least bother to assemble them the right way

Many years ago I saw a sign at a business with a misspelled word in the window. When I asked about it they said a misspelled word attracts more attention.
Of course I don't know why they put the head of that whistle on the other end. Unless it makes it easier to play oriental music.

Not quite sure if we're talking about the same thing, but the Sindt D that I used to have had a stiffer 2nd octave than the 2014 Killarney I compared it with.

My 2018 Killarney is a different beast.

Richard, I recall you saying in a previous post somewhere that the more recent Killarneys sound less pure than the earlier version Killarney that you play. Does that mean the new Killarney sounds less like a Sindt or more like a Sindt? I wonder if this was by design or something that gradually evolved. It's hard to tell by just listening to YouTube.
