I just learned from there that my preferred tune, NOEL, for It Came Upon a Midnight Clear was named not for the occasion that the carol celebrates, but for the composer, Gerard Noel.

If my memory serves me correctly, there are also at least a couple of hymns in the (1980s) Methodist hymnal which are paired with more than one tune. That is, printed in full more than once in the book -- though it also simply lists an alternate tune for some as well. (I also seem to remember getting one wrong at some point in my brief career as an organist, though it's long enough ago now I don't remember the details at this point.)pancelticpiper wrote:I might say that as long as you're staying in a single hymnal you're good, but that's not the case, because the same tune might be used for two, three, or four different hymns in the same hymnal.
