Killarney, easy to overblow?

Post by piperjoe »

Just got my new Killarney high D. Mostly like it, but it is really easy to overblow.

Admittedly, I've been playing Milligans for quite a while.

Just wondering what others think...

Tell us something.: I'm a historian and the author of "The Beat Cop:Chicago's Chief O'Neill and the Creation of Irish Music," published by the University of Chicago in 2022. I live in Arlington VA and play the flute sincerely but not well

I don't find that, but I've never tried a MIlligan.

Tell us something.: I’m a whistle, fiddle and tenor guitar player. Mostly low D, mostly Irish trad, but I’ll try any fiddle tune on whistle.

No, I don’t find it easy to overblow. It’s exceptionally easy to play. A Milligan is a wide bore and uses more air, the Killarney is a narrow bore and uses little air. That is the significant playing difference. I own and play both.

Yeah, it takes a lighter touch than a Milligan, which requires leaning in more.
Just stick with practicing and in time your mind will subconsciously make those micro-adjustments needed btwn whistles. It’ll just become automatic, kinda like muscle memory.

Thanks to all three of you...

You've confirmed what I thought was happening.

I'm used to Reyburn Low Ds and the Milligans in D/C/A so I'm just trying to put too much air into the Killarney. :o

Reminds me of high school when my little brother decided to switch from tuba to piccolo...

I'll keep working it, when I do hit it just right the Killarney is fantastic.
