These are very different whistles. I am an intermediate player...some may say beginner and that's fine. I need help making a choice if anyone has input I'd love to hear it. I am considering each whistle for a different reason (obviously) bit would like your opinion on the most useful all around with good tone and plays a minimum of second octave decently. Thank you in advance.
The Tony Dixon Brass Trade
The Shaw
The Freeman Blackbird.
I know many will say the Blackbird right away, I am just concerned it may not sound as sweet as brass or as traditional. I know Freeman is the best at tweaks.

- Tell us something.: I am looking for advice and sources for players that are more experienced than I am. I can play basic makes of whistle with relative ease but am looking for something a bit higher in quality.

- Tell us something.: I've been trying to learn the recorder for about 5 years now and want to add a new instrument (tin whistle) to my repertoire. I hope with only 6 holes life will be a bit easier... (John Sheahan's Marino Casino in the Gaiety theatre has something to do with it - whereas my head knows that 40 years of practice is the reason why it sounds so good, I'm still hoping...)

Re: Purchasing new whistle
I know none of the whistles you cite, but I have discovered that I personally prefer brass over nickel. Which is as useless to you as all other opinions you will get here because you are the only person who can decide what you prefer...

Re: Purchasing new whistle
Of the 3 that you cite, I have 2 Tony Dixon Trad brass, (A & G), they play OK for me in the second octave, but I'm only a beginner on whistle, & found they needed a slightly different technique to my Generations/Feadog because of the shorter beak.

Re: Purchasing new whistle
I have played all three and my preferences are as follows.
1. Blackbird (I do prefer the Freeman Mellow Dog over the Blackbird.)
2. Dixon
3. Shaw
