Resources for teaching Tin whistle to kids?

Post by joshua7b »

Good morning,
It looks like it has been years since any one has asked this question...

Do you know of any good resources online to use for teaching kids how to play the whistle?
Thank you
Being Irish, he had an abiding sense of tragedy, which sustained him through temporary periods of joy.

Tell us something.: I have grown up surrounded by Irish music and culture and have played the whistle since first grade. I love playing the various instruments I have aquired over the years and would love to help others with their instruments in any way I can.

The Online Academy of Irish Music is a favorite for many starters both young and old. I've never taken any of their courses, but from what people tell me it would seem that they cover the material in a pretty clear way. In my own humble opinion, however, a one-on-one whistle teacher in person or over skype would be an invaluable resource for your child. Just so there is someone to remedy your child's unique struggles with the whistle and to help them build confidence by playing in front of another person.
Cheers!

Online resource I've used is Ryan Duns tutorial:

Books, there are several. I've started five year olds on Stephen Ducke's books:

The whole series of books by Stephen Ducke has been a big help.

A newer book Irish tin whistle songbook may help you as it includes staff notation, finger tabs, and lyrics.
https://www.amazon.com/Irish-Songs-Whis ... e+songbook

Everybody learns in their own particular way with some individuals learning by ear and/or by watching the fingering, while other people learn staff notation, yet, others learn from the whistle fingering tabs.

Happy birthday is a nice starter tune/song because the kids already know how to sing it and what it's supposed to sound like. In the group of kids I play with we play Happy Birthday everytime as a warm up and we ask if anyone around is having a birthday. Someone somewhere is having a birthday.
