Since you mention it, any suggested listening for an introduction to Shetland music?

Hmmm, depends if you want classic source material or shiny modern recordings, and not sure we should get into too big a digression on Doc's CP, but...

You want fiddle, and you could do (a lot) worse than start with The Silver Bow by Tom Anderson & Aly Bain (which I've heard referred to in Shetland as 'the Bible') and Scottish Tradition 4: Shetland Fiddle (which is old School of Scottish Studies recordings). I've got both and, while there are better recorded, more modern options than either, they're true classics.

Edited as I said "you'll want to hear these clips" but just realized that you did get to hear them.
Yes I did.

Yes true classics indeed. Those are two of my all-time favourite albums, of any genre!

If you're seriously interested, you can download Peter Cooke's out-of-print book with audio examples, but these (showing their age!) taped excerpts aren't something you're going to sit down and listen to like an album. Peter was my lecturer at Edinburgh University and I'm back in occasional touch with him through his participation in the Lowland and Border Pipers' Society Facebook group.

(NB The book download's just scanned pages in a PDF, but the audio examples are individual files.)

Interested only as a listener, not as a player, and the two albums you pointed me to were an excellent resource for that. After a number of lessons with Cape Breton fiddlers, I had to concede that I wasn't going to shine as a fiddle player.

Well, I don't play fiddle, but love the music and am interested both for its own sake and to see what I can apply to my own flute playing etc. So try to learn from the characteristic bowing styles and internal rhythms rather than just treat it as generic ('Irish flute' style?) trad. I find Shetland music to sit and articulate well on flute, but don't play it so much on whistle, though (to get back to the thread subject!) Talbert appears to have given it a go.

This is what I get:
Can't scan file for viruses

"Moon Of Tibet 11-26-17.wav" (74 MB) exceeds the maximum file size that Google can scan. This file might harm your computer, so only play this file if you understand the risks.
Probably harmless, but it doesn't exactly inspire confidence.

I got the same message ... but played it anyway. I should have heeded the warning.

Yeah, it's just the same thing all over again. I'll ignore the warning anyway and give it a listen.
