RIP Alex Green, Scottish whistle player

Very sad to report that Scottish whistle player Alex Green passed away yesterday. Alex was a good friend and musical inspiration to me and many others over the years, and certainly one of the pioneers and strongest advocates for the playing and acceptance of the tin whistle as a serious instrument in Scottish traditional music.
All the more remarkable when you consider that he lost 2 fingers in an accident at an early age, and yet persevered to become such a capable musician.

I posted a few examples of his unique style of playing on "Youtube" a wee while back - here they are here :

May he rest in peace.

So sorry to hear about his passing.

I had come across one of his videos a while back by accident (I was looking at piping videos) and I found it impressive that someone could do such a good job of tackling those pipe tunes on whistle.

Watching his fingers brings back fond memories of another Scottish musician who has recently passed, Pipe Major Charles Lumsden, whom I had the great honour of playing under. He had lost much of two fingers in an industrial accident, and it was fascinating to watch his fingers while playing.

Colin and I decided to dedicate some of yesterday's programme to the memory of Alex Green, playing a couple of tracks from his CD "Whistle O'er The Lave O't" and with me sharing some of the memories I have of his musical career, and some of the times we had together in the past.
I'd like to think it may be of some interest to anyone with an interest in Scottish traditional music played on the tin-whistle.
RIP, Alex,

Kenny

Recently found a nice Scottish Recording called Nimble Fingers with Alex, Gordon Duncan and others.
I really like his whistle version of Our Highland Queen on this recording.
