Bought the Genereation GHB whistle in D (aka Elfsong Enchantress), it fired my curiosity, so when an Elfsong Enchanter came up on eBay for a reasonable price, (£15 all in, or $17) i got it too. It is fun trying to play them, trying to remember chanter fingering sometimes ties my fingers in knots.

Another impulse purchase was the Grey Larsen book, it was a a surprise when I heard the thud as it hit the floor when the postman delivered it. I wasn't expecting it to be the size it was, no CDs with it though, but for £5 delivered I can't complain.

If you have an antique whistle check it for lead solder. They have swab kits you can pick up at hardware stores that change color when the touch lead.

I wouldn't worry too much about that.......my mains water came through lead pipes, & I had been drinking it for over 58 years, before I moved house, & I'm 70 now, with no ill effects.

Sorry I missed this question when you posted it!

When I was transitioning out of fluteplaying and into Low Whistles I picked up loads of Susatos because they were locally available (I could try them) and inexpensive.

I had them in almost all the lower keys:

Low C
Low D
Low Eb
Low E
Low F
Mezzo Gb
Mezzo G
Mezzo Ab
Mezzo A

then off the Susatos, for the higher keys

Generation Bb
Generation B
Generation C
Generation C#
Feadog D
Feadog/Generation Franken Eb

When I went on my big Low D Whistle Quest in the 2000s and got a couple dozen different makes of Low D I discovered that I really didn't care for Susatos compared to the alloy Low Ds such as MK, Burke, Overton, Goldie, Lofgren, Reviol, Reyburn, etc.

So when a guy wanted Susatos in all the odd keys I sold him the lot, around a dozen Susatos I had including some styles no longer made like the angled-neck Low D and Low C.

I've always thought Susatos got better as they got lower and Susato Low Ds are very nice players and that keyless angled-neck Susato Low C was a superb whistle.

I only have one Susato left- a Mezzo G, a very early one, the first Susato style machined from brown ABS stock with a wooden block.

My Susatos in 2004. You can see the angled-neck keyless Low D and Low C.

Is that set of pipes on the right made of alumin(i)um?

Yes Nanohedron - chanter and drones are aluminium. Not sure if the are from the same set though.

Big Davy,

Who made the wooden whistle set in your picture above? I'm assuming it's a high D and C set? How do you like it/them?

Hi TxWhistler

It is a D/C set by the Canadian whistle maker David O'Brien - got the set from a fellow chiffer in Ireland. I had bought whistles direct from O'Brien before (Low D and wooden high Ds in maple) and liked them. I didn't think I was taking much of a risk with the set and (I wasn't) - the whistle plays nicely when set up as D, but I have a preference for when it is in C mode.

Davey, as a wild guess, would that be a set of pipes by McNulty?
