Ooo...that's an interesting looking whistle. Now you're activating my WhOAD. :)

Is that a standard item Kenny makes? I don't see them on his Web site. How does it play?

Hi Brett
McNicholl whistle vid - this is the whistle I got. took it for a test run at the session last night. It has a mellow tone to my ears and takes a bit more air than my usual high D drivers (Bleazey, Sweetheart and Ormiston).

I need to spend a month at a mountain retreat with just one whistle, one bottle, and a big novel.

Hi Will

It sounds lovely, you did a good job.

Can I enquire as to the type of wood used?

Hi Big Davy
I would be interested to read your thoughts on the Syn Low D. I am thinking of getting one. I have the Syn aluminium D, C, Bb and A as well as a wooden Syn D. Love them all other than the A. The A is OK but it is too temperamental when playing the bell note in that it needs such a light touch of breath to get the note that it is almost too difficult to play. The C is unbelievably good. I would love to own a high D that plays like that.
Thanks in advance
JTU

I love these threads. It's like going to one of "those meetings. :D

In the 11 years or so that I've been here, I have also gone through a few whistles. Currently, I have:

Low D - Chieftain, Alba, Susato and Dixon
Low Eb - Susato
Low E - Susato
Low F- Susato
Bb - Generation, Parks, Susato, O'Brien.
C - Feadog, Susato, Parks x 3, O'Brien, Generation
D - Oz Vambrace, Susato, Parks x 3, O'Brien, Dixon, Feadog, Generation, Walton Mellow D, Oak
Eb - Parks

I know there are more... Somewhere...

There are a few that I regret letting go... A couple Burke and a C Impempe. But, I am very happy with what I have. The whistle I grab most often is the C Susato. Followed by the Parks C walkabout and the Oz.

Can't decide which Low D I like best.

And flutes. Let's not go there. I've more of those than whistles I think...

Hey, Richard, I noticed that you wrote you've gotten rid of all your Susatos. May I ask why?

Lots of whistles here, mainly Gens, which I don't really play any more, but they got me hooked. :D

Main whistles are;
Low D = Tony Dixon ABS one piece & a Howard brass (black)
Low F = Shearwater non tunable aluminium
Alto G = Tony Dixon Trad brass
Alto A = Tony Dixon Trad Brass, Tony Dixon tunable aluminium, Chieftain Thunderbird aluminium non tunable
High C = Tony Dixon tunable aluminium Duo, (& two cheap ABS plastic ones that sound nice)

Flutes too;
Low D = Tony Dixon ABS one piece, Damian Thompson 2 piece delrin, Tony Dixon 3 piece polymer
Low F = M&E 3 piece polymer

Hi JTU

If you like the C, you should try the B body as well. I have the same problem with the A body.

The low D (I have a red one) has a complex tone (not like the pure tone of a Burke) it sounds closer to the sound of my Bleazey low D.

Breath wise it is easy to play and you can reach the third octave with no real effort, my only quibble is that the tone holes especially the E are at about the limit of playability for my thin fingers (stretch is no problem).

My whistle seems to be aimed at making the second octave easier to play so the bottom D does not really honk, you can over blow it quite easily (it takes much less air than I expected given the enormous whistle head and wide bore). From the look of it, it is up to the Syn standard of build (like a tank). The head is relatively easy to move while tuning the whistle, but has enough friction to keep it where you set it after tuning.

I like it, on my limited exposure to it so far, but I expected to like it given that I like my Syn high whistles (even the A body once my breath control improved enough to play it).

If I recall it was cocobolo . Seemed a fair match for the sweetheart rosewood . Glad it’s playing well. I regularly trim down my whistle collection , and as regularly add to it!! :-)

Another low D will be heading my way soon - Ebay - this one is an aluminium non tunable, & looks like it is a Chieftain, (from the fipple shape), Thunderbird, or V5 possibly. I'm trusting to my gut feeling for this one.

A Clare two piece whistle can be added to the list. I actually bought it to get the case that it was in, to see if it would fit one of my wooden high Ds, (it didn't). I tried it out of curiosity. I had never seen a Clare whistle in the flesh, so to speak, to my surprise it was lovely and incredibly easy to play.

Looks like I lucked out for the price I paid (the equivalent of around $10 American)

Happy bunny here :D :D :D
