Since I'm making my own whistles these days, I've converted to BOAD - Bagpipe Obsessive Acquisition Disorder. Every now and then I have a wee breakdown over the atrocities being committed by my country and others, and the general state of the planet people my age will have to occupy for many years to come. My solution to these thus far has been to get profoundly drunk and buy a new kind of bagpipe.

I owe a Lindsay System SSP, a Hamon Sackpipa, and a Juro Dufek Flemish Pipe to this phenomenon.

My bodhran collection could also be added to the mix of obsessive acquisition. Whistles are cheap by comparison.

Bodhran collection? I'm having a hard time wrapping my mind around that.

I have one, which I bought new from Bo Hinricks in 1978, and I've never felt I needed any more. He shot and skinned the goat, as I recall.

Back to whistles, the contents of my gig-roll has changed a bit, and I made a quick video so people can hear how they all sound.

My list of whistles was constantly growing monthly(ish), but now I seem to have all that I want, certainly more than I need.

(Last acquisition was my MK Kelpie low F, a really nice sounding & playing whistle.)

I am a magpie for instruments, and a bodhran player, so my collection grows, currently 10, (as does my whistle and pipes collections grow). The whistle purchases were to create a session pack for the new bodhran I acquired (Renegade Rhythms 16"). The drum bag acts as a whistle case . I like to have D, C, Bb and A whistles available with whichever drum I decide to use.

Compared to other instruments they are cheap, & therein lies the (our) problem, it's easy to buy just one more...

I've had a small change to my gig roll: I sold the Burke Low Eb and Mezzo F and purchased a Colin Goldie mezzo F, which is fantastic.

Now my only Burke is the mezzo G.

That gives me three Goldies: Low C, Low D, and mezzo F.

During the lockdown I've been playing every day and I've come to a new appreciation of the Alba Low E.

It has a narrow bore for its size, and not surprisingly it has an uber-sweet 2nd octave and a somewhat quiet low octave.

But the more I play it the more power I can get out of the bellnote and other low notes, and that whistle is steadily rising in my estimation.

Besides buying one, another way to get a new whistle is to cobble together a new combination from stuff you already have. Recently I've been playing the Goldie Low D with the Low C headjoint, it's like having a new Low D.

The Low D headjoint is a Medium Blower, the Low C headjoint is a Soft Blower, so I have a new Goldie soft-blowing Low D to play. I'm really liking it.
