Re: WhOAD and getting slagged by Dr SS
Since I'm making my own whistles these days, I've converted to BOAD - Bagpipe Obsessive Acquisition Disorder. Every now and then I have a wee breakdown over the atrocities being committed by my country and others, and the general state of the planet people my age will have to occupy for many years to come. My solution to these thus far has been to get profoundly drunk and buy a new kind of bagpipe.
I owe a Lindsay System SSP, a Hamon Sackpipa, and a Juro Dufek Flemish Pipe to this phenomenon.
No regrets.

Hi MadmanWithaWhistle
In my case it is UPOAD. Take a look at page 119 of the pictures of your pipes thread for evidence of that
My bodhran collection could also be added to the mix of obsessive acquisition. Whistles are cheap by comparison.

I bought one some years ago. Low price. It's a nice whistle and if I didn't have any other whistles I would be totally fine with just that one.BigDavy wrote:A Clare two piece whistle can be added to the list.

Bodhran collection? I'm having a hard time wrapping my mind around that.
I have one, which I bought new from Bo Hinricks in 1978, and I've never felt I needed any more. He shot and skinned the goat, as I recall.
Back to whistles, the contents of my gig-roll has changed a bit, and I made a quick video so people can hear how they all sound.
From smallest to biggest:
1) Feadog MK1 head on Generation Eb body
2) Feadog MK1 D (c1980)
3) Walton C head on self-made C# body
4) Generation C (c1980)
5) Generation Bb head on self-made B natural body
6) self-modified Generation Bb head on Generation Bb body
7) Jerry Freeman modified Generation Bb head on self-made A body
8 ) Burke G
9) Burke F
10) Burke Low Eb (I demonstrate the thumb-hole)
11) Goldie Low D
12) Goldie Low C
13) Alba Bass A

The Bb and A are the two best players, though all are good players or they wouldn't be in the roll!

My list of whistles was constantly growing monthly(ish), but now I seem to have all that I want, certainly more than I need.
(Last acquisition was my MK Kelpie low F, a really nice sounding & playing whistle.)

I am a magpie for instruments, and a bodhran player, so my collection grows, currently 10, (as does my whistle and pipes collections grow). The whistle purchases were to create a session pack for the new bodhran I acquired (Renegade Rhythms 16"). The drum bag acts as a whistle case

O'Brien rover D/C set (lock down and resulting spare cash burning hole in pocket). The first whistle I have knowingly bought from a fellow Chiffer.

- Tell us something.: I am a longtime piper, and have added in the few years a bunch of Irish whistles and smallpipes to my collection. Looking for new instruments and like-minded people!
Re: WhOAD and getting slagged by Dr SS
Geez, I must be spending more than I should on my whistle roll! From top to bottom:
- Generation F
- Killarney Eb
- Generation Eb
- Goldie D non-tunable
- Thunderbird C
- Oak C
- Thunderbird Bb
- Goldie A tunable
- MK Pro A tunable
- Mk Pro F tunable
- Kerry Optima F tunable
- Kerry custom low D
- Goldie low D non-tunable
And a couple other cheapo whistles kicking around in drawers. I suspect the Optima Cobre will make its way to my collection as the Goldie is fantastic but a bit quiet for sessions.

Compared to other instruments they are cheap, & therein lies the (our) problem, it's easy to buy just one more...

Re: WhOAD and getting slagged by Dr SS
I've had a small change to my gig roll: I sold the Burke Low Eb and Mezzo F and purchased a Colin Goldie mezzo F, which is fantastic.
Now my only Burke is the mezzo G.
That gives me three Goldies: Low C, Low D, and mezzo F.
During the lockdown I've been playing every day and I've come to a new appreciation of the Alba Low E.
It has a narrow bore for its size, and not surprisingly it has an uber-sweet 2nd octave and a somewhat quiet low octave.
But the more I play it the more power I can get out of the bellnote and other low notes, and that whistle is steadily rising in my estimation.
Besides buying one, another way to get a new whistle is to cobble together a new combination from stuff you already have. Recently I've been playing the Goldie Low D with the Low C headjoint, it's like having a new Low D.
The Low D headjoint is a Medium Blower, the Low C headjoint is a Soft Blower, so I have a new Goldie soft-blowing Low D to play. I'm really liking it.
