Vin Garbutt - whistle player : RIP

Post by kenny »

It’s been reported on the "Mudcat cafe" website that Tees-side singer / songwriter / guitarist / whistle player Vin Garbutt has departed from us. Vin was one of the most popular singers and musicians on the UK folk scene for over 40 years, a great singer, a perceptive - and on occasions controversial - songwriter, a great entertainer, and on the tunes, a player with a unique whistle style. I honestly can’t think of anyone like him on the UK folk scene today, and his wit and humour will be sorely missed.

Here are a couple of "Youtube" clips of him playing the whistle, in his own very individual style :

May he rest in peace.

Sad to hear. He was the first whistle player I ever saw/heard when he played at a local festival—the Eisteddfod—back in the mid-1970s. At the time he had a recording by the name of The Young Tin Whistle Pest. Great name for an album. Had it on vinyl till the dog found it one day... As Kenny says, also a great entertainer.

Best wishes.
