I have an old generation whistle which may be pre 1980. I think I bought it before 1980, but I honestly can't remember. Is there anyway to tell by the naked eye? I am very curious, thanks

If it is pre 1982 it will have a (roughly) pea sized oval mould mark on the underside of the head, where it slopes up to accomodate the tube. The second way to tell is that the front of the whistlehead will have a straight line going down the center of the beak of slightly raised plastic.

If it plays nicely, it doesn't really matter when it was made. However, in my experience the ones made during this time period were mostly good, some of them very good, whereas with recent ones the nice ones are few and far between.

I always have a bit of trouble with terminology, but one other, albeit less obvious distinction, is the size of the "bump" on the sound blade. On pre-82 generations, this bump is smaller than post-82 generations.

Hopefully these photos should help visualize what the above posts are saying.

I was born in 1977, so my generation is 80s and 90s.

Mine are usually reckoned by the number of teeth marks per centimetre.

No, I don't chew whistles, but the old ones occasionally gifted to me by friends (always a Generation whistle it seems) all appear to have been worried by an especially tenacious terrier dog.
