I know medical advice is rightly forbidden on here, so must stress I'm not looking for that, but last Friday I had to have a partial thumb fusion and I was wondering if any fellow Chiffer has endured similar and did it affect their playing in anyway.
I'll have a cast of for 6 to 8 weeks and when that comes off I will have lost the middle joint of my right thumb.
Post Thumb Fusion Whistle Playing.
Re: Post Thumb Fusion Whistle Playing.
Seems to me you already have the medical advice of a Doctor. Mechanically I see no reason to not be abel to play the whistle.Lempriere wrote:I know medical advice is rightly forbidden on here, so must stress I'm not looking for that, but last Friday I had to have a partial thumb fusion and I was wondering if any fellow Chiffer has endured similar and did it affect their playing in anyway.

I can't relate to your particular situation, but musicians have found ways to compensate for various physical limitations. Django Reinhardt and Les Paul immediately come to mind.

FWIW, Glenn Schultz had one, maybe two of his thumb joints fused and played OK afterwards. Assuming it's fused in a relaxed curved position I think you'll adapt nicely.

Thanks for the replies, this one is particularly encouraging
I seem to recall the surgeon saying it was pinned 'at a 20 degree angle' so I'm hoping that will accommodate playing a whistle comfortably.brewerpaul wrote:FWIW, Glenn Schultz had one, maybe two of his thumb joints fused and played OK afterwards.
