Well, there are not a lot experienced whistle players that are of fans (that I know) of low backpressure. It limits expression. It gives a breathy voice instead of the proper bite of good chiff.

Brian Finnegan of Flook plays all Colin's whistles and likes low back pressure, I believe. Personal preference more than anything. One neat thing about high back-pressure that it allows you to do circle-breathing, not that that is a requirement for ITM.

Burke's have abit less back pressure than Goldie's and Kerry's in general and are more like Chieftains. As you know back pressure varies within the Goldie range. Burke's are being played by Joannie Madden and Brian McCoy who are among the most brilliant and experianced players. They are definately quite free blowing and not at all tight but do have sufficient back pressure to please the very best and most talented players. They are not clog prone. One reason that waiting lists are long is that some makers spend ages talking and writing to people instead of making whistles and others keep to the minimium of verbiage. This is only one reason though. As I said the anodising on a small high back pressure whistle can make the thing as tight as a da da da da because it has not been allowed for. Extreme back pressure will not help anyone. It just stops enough air going through to make it sound reliably nice and makes it clog very easily. Aperture too teeny mate. Best of luck with the circular breathing. Just a tiny bit less and it would have been a real tart. :tomato:

You would have to times the thickness of the anodising by four to get the full effect on the windway and it does believe you me make a differance. It may be abit thicker than you thought too. . Also a really good experianced player will be able to play with expression on a low or high back pressure whistle. Assuming it's not overly tight by mistake, having the required flexibility of technique. We all know how good Mary Bergin makes Generation whistles sound don't we? Get out of here! Tighter whistles can give more problems maintaining consistently good timbre which is why beginners should start somewhere else. Burke whistles will be a very fine thing from day one to the Apocalypse so let's hope he passes on his trade skills and they do also have sufficient bight! Also breathy tone can be just what you need for some repertoire. Pass the Songbird LowD and don't bin the panpipes. Nice to meet you Bloomfield.

Not if it's been anodized on the inside. :)

It's too hot here I'm going. I hope common sense will prevail. I have to notch up more practise time. I never tried an O'Riordan. I believe he has produced a variety of designs.

Joannie Madden and Brian McCoy of The Kells make it quite clear that it is possible to be an excellent proffesional whistle player without getting involved with Goldie whistles. Non regreta rien  :tantrum:

No one has said otherwise, as I recall.

Members of the in crowd have sent special encoded messages of a non mystical shamanistic nature regarding the fact that some depressives experiance only heavenly happiness in life as a paradoxical meditation preparatory to performing the Contradiction Reel in Australia but personaly I am refusing to take them onboard. Most depressives feel sad. Insanity suspected. I hope they read this and understand why I have opted out of continuing that particular line of discussion. It's a waste of time and delays both construction and practising of whistles. :P

I think it's time for some moderation in this thread.
