My first (slow)Seisún

My wife and I found a local beginners slow session through Meet-Up.

Last night was the inaugural event.
Our hosts were very good musicians and patient teachers.
One of the ladies played a Burke Session Whistle really well. That thing is a cannon!

We had lots of fun, and met some interesting new people.
One of our new acquaintances is or was a neighbor of Enda Seery, how small a
world do we live in? We may be taking Irish language lessons with her.
The food was great, as was the whisky.

The music?
Our hosts played well, but I didn't do nearly as well as I would have hoped.
My concertina seemed very quite in a loud pub atmosphere, except when I hit the wrong note.
The Big Muddy mandolin my wife usually plays couldn't be heard at all. She'll take the arch top Kentucky next time.

We did get a tune book from our host so we will be able to learn the settings that they play.
But honestly even the tunes I knew were difficult and often I lost it all together trying to keep up.
We are going to have to redouble our practice.
It was lots of fun, but definitely an eye opener.

You didn't mention whether the session used microphones or not which could help in some environments.

Anyway, glad you had fun! I'm still newbie-ish too.

Awesome making it out to a session. It can take a little while to get used to playing out in front of people. Even though I've been performing music for years, whenever I pick up a new instrument, it takes some time getting used to playing it in public.

Thanks for posting this! I'm going to be in LA next month and would love to join you all. Sometimes with the Session.org it's hard to determine what level of play to expect.
