Alternate Ways to Get C Sharp on a Low G Whistle?

Post by Tom Dowling »

Hello Fipplers: I was wondering if there are alternatives to half holing the "C" hole (third from top) on a Low G Whistle in order to get a clean C-Sharp. The links to that Turquoise Teleford/Full Body Burn site did not work and there was a message that indicated that the account had been suspended. Messing around on my very fine Michael Burke Low G did not yield any likely candidates other than half-holing the C hole. I am working on a tune that, due to preceding and following notes to the C #, half-holing is not ideal.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Tom Dowling

Tell us something.: May 2022, I'm a second-time beginner to the whistle and low whistle after a three-year gap due to a chest injury brought to an end twelve years of playing. I've started on a high whistle and much is coming back quickly but it will be a while before I can manage a Low D again where my interest really lies. I chiefly love slow airs rather than dance tunes and am a fan of the likes of Davy Spillane, Eoin Duignan, Fred Morrison and Paddy Keenan.

Have you tried XX0XX0 or XX0XXX?

That's the D hole, played by the C finger. Confusing, perhaps, but holes are correctly named for the note they vent, not what you cover to get the note.

Mike is right; XXOXXX is probably your only real hope of avoiding the half hole, and it's still likely to be sharp and/or stuffy.
And we in dreams behold the Hebrides.

Thank you for that correction Peter. You have captured what I meant. As always, i am much easier to get along with when I am wrong.

I will try that suggestion.

Be Well,

Mike is right XXOXXO for the upper octave and XXOXXX for the lower octave.
