Re: Suggestions for 8-key D flutes

I haven't seen a boehm-style footjoint from John Gallagher, but the last time I discussed pricing with him, the normal old school C-foot was an extra $1200 USD, and a 6-key flute was $3000. His prices may have risen, as that was at least a couple years ago (on the other hand the price was the same ...

Re: Is it possible?

It depends on the size of the bag, I'd guess, as well as how hard the reed is... as well as how fast you're playing :) I'd guess at a relaxed speed, it might take about a minute to get through a tune once. At a faster, dance clip, between 30-45sec. I guess it's possible to play about that long on on...

FS: Kennedy/Benson 3/4 Concert Pitch (D) Uilleann Pipes SOLD

I'm selling my 3/4 concert pitch uilleann pipes. The chanter, drones (and stock), and bellows were made by Joe Kennedy in 2005 and the tenor and baritone regulators were made by Steph and Tim Benson in 2009 or so (I can't recall exactly when). The bag is a Jackie Boyce bag that was put on more recen...

Re: Lower regulator notes jumping the octove / squeaking

Rory, you clearly need to get out more: Bill Haneman, Derrick Gleason, Donnacha Dwyer, Jim Wenham, Micky Dunne, just off the top of my head, and I know there a bunch more that I can't recall the names of that are all making great pipes in Ireland...

Re: Lower regulator notes jumping the octove / squeaking

The other set I've seen listed as a C 3/4 set, and there are photos of both up on NPUs site, I believe. As well as on Ronan's website. So I guess probably you're conflating the two things... No big deal either way, and I could still be wrong! Editing to add that I think you are correct as the set he...

Re: Lizzo and the Laurent

I wonder why? Short answer? Being an icon. That puts a target on anyone's back, and the ammo is whatever's convenient to the attacker's mindset. I don't follow Lizzo's work, so I don't have a lot of emotional investment in her apart from a distant satisfaction at her being a Minnesota lass, but I w...

Re: Lower regulator notes jumping the octove / squeaking

I think you will find that Ronan's 'B' set has a 'C' body ... or at least that is the way he ran it a few years ago.... So, in trying to bring the C regulators down to B to match the chanter he wanted to use, there were all sorts of strokes pulled to achieve this. I will certainly defer to you, but...

Re: C Whistle - Transpose or Not

[ …it's much easier to say "play a D!" and mean XXX XXX (for the whistle) rather than "play all fingers down!" regardless of the actual pitch of the instrument. More information than a single note name is usually needed to determine the appropriate whistle for whatever tune is be...

Re: C Whistle - Transpose or Not

I should point out that in ITM parlance, flutes and uilleann pipes with a D bell note are termed as being at "concert pitch". Something to keep in mind, just in case future discussions arise. Something I very carefully pointed out.... On my walk I realised that rather than "when you ...

Re: C Whistle - Transpose or Not

No, of course not. When you play a Bb whistle (trad convention), what note sounds when you play OXXOOO? Hint, it's not C! Whatever note is produced with respect to the fingering for the note C, which for whistles is OXXOOO, is the name in classical terminology. Why do traditional musicians call it a...

Indeed! But I hope you saw the short answer to your question:
C fingering means the fingering for the note C.

In other words, if you play a C, does a C sound, or something else?

Re: C Whistle - Transpose or Not

You know what, I'll write more and be more confusing, and give an example: --In the traditional world, a whistler will say "I'm playing the fingering XXX XXX, ie 6 fingers down, and I call that a D, and it's sounding as a D, so I'm calling this a concert pitch instrument, aka a D instrument&quo...
