Re: Flute cleaning
... Remove the head from the body and put the dowel inside the head resting on the inner face of the cork. Mark the dowel at the center point of the embouchure (typically somewhere between 18 and 21 mm depending on the flute). Then you can hold the headjoint and lightly tap the protruding end of ...

Forbes Delrin & Travel Pouch (Keyless D)
... choice for beginners that sounds how an Irish flute should. I narrowed my list down to Forbes and Somers. Can't go wrong with either. Has squared embouchure which helps with making the flute sound, which eases learning. It's a delight to play. $300 with free shipping within US (willing to ship ...

Re: Delrin flute suggestions for 2024?
I'm also very interested in a keyed Delrin flute. I have a Forbes keyless with is very light and loud, with big holes and a big squarish embouchure cut. Nice tone, well in tune, loud. Big embouchure cut makes it hard work to get the air out of the tone. I have a Copley which is heavier, smaller ...

Re: Which flute keys are the best keys?
... Perhaps but as tstermitz said it opens the door to the 3rd octave, and practicing 3rd octave notes is one of the best exercises for focusing your embouchure. I'd say that even if you don't use Eb (and personally I use it often), it would be worth having it just for that. Another use for keys, ...

Re: Wobbly embouchure due to sweating (and how to deal with it?)
I generally wear a beard in the winter but not the summer. Like others, I feel that the beard definitely helps the flute from sliding on my lower lip. But I can't stand having a beard in the hot humid mid-Atlantic summer. So I wear a soul patch year round. Keeps the rest of my face from sweating in ...

Volume Control Ring - Why Doesn't it Exist??
... This got me to thinking: why don't Irish musicians play this way? And then I quickly realized that playing this way effectively takes a lot of embouchure control and makes staying in tune very difficult, and I assumed that was the answer. You need to have your lip in an incredibly precise point, ...

Re: Wobbly embouchure due to sweating (and how to deal with it?)
Thanks everyone for sharing. I'll definitely try out a few of these things, handlebar tape and medical tape being top of the list, I guess. Don't know about the cork wax, though as I need to restock on some cork grease anyways, I might just look into that one, too. (Me not being a guy, I'll have to ...

Re: Wobbly embouchure due to sweating (and how to deal with it?)
I don't have that problem but two possible solutions spring to mind. If you're a guy and don't have one already, maybe grow a beard for a less slippery contact point under your lip? Or at least a soul patch. :D I have a beard, not a very full one but maybe enough under my lower lip that I haven't h...

Re: Wobbly embouchure due to sweating (and how to deal with it?)
... a discussion years ago here on C&F about the merits of beards for male flute players. Another idea: I always rub a little cork wax around the embouchure hole after playing, to prevent that dried-out area in the wood that develops from mouth contact. Every couple of weeks I also apply a very ...

Re: Wobbly embouchure due to sweating (and how to deal with it?)
For years, I had the same problem your report, especially when nervous. I am a cyclist. Handlebar tape usually comes with double-sided sticky tape underneath to keep the tape from slipping over time. The outer surface is slightly textured to keep sweaty hands from slipping. So I cut a small piece of...

Wobbly embouchure due to sweating (and how to deal with it?)
I am interested in how you all are dealing with perspiration at the embouchure of the flute. It's slowly getting warmer here again and in summer I often find that I start sweating and the flute slips away. I then regularly wipe my chin on a handkerchief or ...

Re: Superb podcast about the dizi
... membrane hole placement. I think it can be placed in different positions - on the double dimo membrane flute system, there is one adjacent to the embouchure (2-3cm) and on the tenon side (2-3cm above). As the distance moves away from the embouchure, the high intensity vibrations of the dimo diminish ...

Re: was there ever any attempts to make a flute with valves?
... more valves you add, the more "error" is added to the pitch when you open multiple valves at once. This can be (mostly) corrected using embouchure on 4-valve brass instruments, but it would be much harder to correct on flute and impossible to correct on whistle, due to the limited embouchure ...

Have you measured the position of the headjoint cork to make sure it is the correct distance fro the center of the embouchure?
