Re: Mick Slevin - RIP

Very sad news indeed. Mick Slevin, Tom Clarke and Nollaig were the teachers in the NPU when I started there. I remember Mick giving me the Cook in the Kitchen and showing me some of the Tommy Reck variations. I don't know why he disappeared either. On one of the source videos Sean Potts praises him ...

Re: Your very first tune

I got my practice set from Matt Kiernan in 1979. I had been playing on the whistle for about a year before that so i already had some tunes.

I met up with a piper called Eamonn Lane who gave me my first tune. It was a jig called the Bank of Turf.

Cheers

Re: Marc Pollier plays J.S. Bach

Hi Thomas While I bow to no man in appreciation of good piping technique I must say that the actual piece left me cold. I felt no emotional attachment whatsoever listening to it. When I listened to Padraig's playing of the "Return of the Queen of Sheba" I got a huge sense of joy and divilm...

Re: John Dwyer - RIP

Thanks Peter for this. I hadn't heard.

I remember learning a reel from an old tin whistle tutor years ago (the one with Micho on the front cover) called Dwyers reel that I always associated with John. I don't know if he wrote it or just played it. :)

Anyways another one gone.

Thanks Peter. A great way to spend a Christmas eve.

Tom Carey was the same type. They all loved the music.

Re: Gerald Haugh - RIP

Thanks for the info Peter. I always liked the man and he was one of the generation of musicians who communicated through their music. He never pushed himself forward or held himself out to be what he wasn't. I didn't know him too well but I met him and played with him in Kilrush. I will dig out the ...

Re: Donncha O'Brien : Flute & Whistle Recital, Willie Week 1

Thanks Peter. You've cleared up one mystery for me. I knew I had the tune from somewhere but couldn't remember where.

I remember learning the Silver Tip from the the Trip to Sligo.

Re: Mary Bergin's own reels

Thanks Kenny.

Lovely tunes and a great pity that they are not played more frequently.

I love the little aba triplet in the last tune.

Am really enjoying the music that you are putting up on youtube.

Keep em coming :D

Thanks Kenny

I must say that I prefer your recordings to most of the videos that the ITMA made available of the WC week.

Take care

Re: New Tunes for the Lock In

Hard to believe it's Willie week. Some musicianers spotted around Miltown, on the sly but socially distanced. Hard to break the habit. Hi Peter I'd say that people had accommodation booked and it was too expensive to cancel (1600 euro for a house in West Park for the week I believe). Typical Clare ...

Re: New Tunes for the Lock In

Michael Stribling, in the Piping in the Parlour series, plays a tune he calls Joe Cooley's Morning Dew which is very similar to the tune in question. A young piper from Co.Down plays the Lass of Carrowcastle in the same series which is the first tune on track 6 of Deadly Buzz. Connections everywhere.

Thanks Kenny. Be very interested to hear Brid.

I liked the video of Maire O'Keefe and her friends playing the Padraig O'Keefe tunes.
