Re: Experience with German TWZ whistle?

For me only the Dixon stands out - negatively, I'm sorry to say. But considering there's microphone, compression and loudspeakers involved here there's no way to say how the whistles sound "in real life". Not to mention that for me as a listener it's much more important who is playing and ...

Re: Does your dog howl when you play the flute?

They don't like the sound. When the weather outside is good my cat leaves the house when I unpack the recorder. When the weather is bad she waits to hear what I'm playing: If it's a piece I play reasonably well, she stays, if I work on a difficult new one she leaves. And my teacher says he used to h...

Re: Consulting the Oracle of Tyre

Cycling in snow and on ice mostly sucks, there's no way around it. (Not that I like driving in those conditions....) But it's doable. Though I have no experience with a motorized bicycle in a real winter...

Re: Consulting the Oracle of Tyre

Or, of course, you could get the airless route - the reviews on a French shop's site are pretty good. The tyres are supposedly hard to mount, though, you'll want to buy the special tool needed for it at the same time as the tyres. What French shop? :-? https://www.acycles.fr/ville/pneumatiques/pneu...

Re: Consulting the Oracle of Tyre

Can you get Schwalbe Marathon in the U.S.? They are Europe's most famous reinforced tyres (I have some in my garage awaiting the next flat on my e-bike which came with reinforced tyres of another brand and so far I've had one flat during 5700 km. Nearly all country roads, though). Otherwise, just mo...

Re: Small Hands-Is Casey Burns the only solution?

I don't think the example of famous players with small hands and "big" flutes is very helpful. Because firstly there's always exceptional people who can overcome all sorts of difficulties, secondly the age when one starts plays a role (younger joints and tendons are more flexible), thirdly...

Re: Recommend a plastic alto recorder?

That depends on the player. There are lots of people who don't have the clogging problem with Yamahas, but there's also quite a number of people who do have the problem. In which case the easiest solution is another model of recorder...

I know none of the whistles you cite, but I have discovered that I personally prefer brass over nickel. Which is as useless to you as all other opinions you will get here because you are the only person who can decide what you prefer...

Re: The Chinese Knockoff Brigade are getting more ambitious!

... The Chinese can manufacture very well when they want to. Of course - my guess is that 90% of the items I use (and bought in the last 10 years or so) are made in China. I've heard good things about chinese-made viols (for which there is a much smaller market than for classical string instruments...

Re: Learner Question About Timing

...Why would you want to learn foot tapping? It's a crutch at the best of times, it's not part of music and it can get deeply annoying in a lot of cases. ... Obviously, there's no need to tap one's foot if one can keep time by other means. As a recorder player I'm strongly discouraged from tapping ...

Re: The Chinese Knockoff Brigade are getting more ambitious!

Is AliExpress mainly aimed at the European/American market? Because otherwise they could try to sell "locally", i. e. to Asian customers who may never have heard of Killarney. Though somebody seems to have gotten the idea that Feadog is to Irish whistles what Hoover is to vacuum cleaners a...

Re: Features liked for whistle storage

Absolutely, I second that - the more ventilated, the better. I just discovered mould on a wooden recorder which I had stored in a zippered vinyl (?) bag (I don't think it's airtight, and I was sure that the recorder was dry i. e. unplayed for quite some time when I packed it away, but still...)
