Re: Double hole whistles?

second, "pulling out a different whistle" might work for F major, but not for other keys that fiddles sometimes play in, like E major or B major, for example. Good luck finding an affordable E whistle. I have a Sindt B, I suppose I am covered. Only I have yet to encounter a fiddle tune he...

Well, seeing is believing. I suppose in time we'll hear you play tunes in every possible key and conquer the world.

And I've been playing whistles for like, four months, so, I think I know what I'm talking about.. . .

Yes, there's often an element of that in this sort of discussions.

That, and the preaching of the newly converted.

Re: Double hole whistles?

I wasn't going to argue further with the 'true believers' but just for the record: The 10-hole design Morneaux uses is the best scheme anyone has come up with, because it allows you to play with standard 6-hole fingerings while also allowing chromatic playing. That is nonsense. Fully keyed whistles ...

Re: Double hole whistles?

I'm more annoyed that people don't even want to give this system a chance, and would rather shoot it down before they've even tried it. It is your own assumption nobody has tried chromatic whistles or whistles with additional holes. These things are not as new or innovative as you stubbornly seem t...

Re: Double hole whistles?

I'd rather have an instrument that can play in any key than 5 different instruments with different keys/tunings, thanks. So why do you want to play the whistle? This sort of discussion usually seem to be started by people, often relative newcomers, who appear to like the notion of playing the whist...

Re: Double hole whistles?

so let's try to keep it all civil.
And we do that by using terms like 'ye olde conservative whistlers', 'dinosaurs' etc?

Re: Double hole whistles?

As I said: it's fine if you think that is what you need for your own instrument. Advocating it should be standard is a different matter. The beauty of the whistle is its simplicity. It is never going to be a fully chromatic instrument. As it happens, I have a fully keyed 19th century whistle. That i...

Re: Double hole whistles?

it's an excellent design idea. It really ought to be standard, in my opinion ( It's fine to get if you feel you need it, the overwhelming majority of whistle players get all they want or need from the standard six hole configuration and have no wish to turn the instrument into something else. :poke:

Re: Instrument fashion in Irish music

I am not sure Tony played with the Kilfenora although many musicians from the area sat in with them at one time or another but I don't think he was a regular member, if at all. A man I knew followed me to the 1980 Willie week and stayed on in Clare after that for a while, making a living as a travel...

Re: Instrument fashion in Irish music

I’m guessing that Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill and her clavinet played a seminal role in that process but haven’t been able to find anything directly about it. Can Mr. Gumby or anyone else provide a pointer or two? I very much doubt the clavinet played a part there. The older musicians often liked a but of...

The Rolling wave had a look at the role of the piano in Irish music. For want of a better place I stick the link here:

Re: Tonguing — where and where not expected

I’m less certain how to deal with the suggestion that it might be somehow deficient because it doesn’t say what it was never intended to. Perhaps the title of this thread ' Tonguing- where and where not expected' raised expectations of what the blog would be dealing with. And as such my expectation...

Re: Tonguing — where and where not expected

This piece would benefit greatly from a more thorough examination of historical styles of traditional whistle playing. While there is not a huge number of historical recordings, compared to some other instruments, dating before, say, the 1940s, they do exist, and they paint a picture of sorts of way...
